Thermospheric Mass Density

Improving orbit prediction via thermospheric density calibration

2023
The uncertainty on Thermospheric Mass Density (TMD), as derived from atmospheric models, can reach extremely high values. This effect is noteworthy in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), where atmospheric drag is the main perturbing force, as well as the most uncertain.

Thermospheric density variations associated with auroral electrojet activity

Journal of Geophysical Research, 1973
Thermosphenc density variations observed during the time period of August 6-8, 1968, are studied in relation to auroral electrojet activity. In situ density measurements were obtained by the accelerometer experiment on the Air force low-altitude density research satellite OV1-15.

Mean thermospheric density estimation derived from satellite constellations

Advances in Space Research, 2015
Abstract This paper defines a method to estimate the mean neutral density of the thermosphere given many satellites of the same form factor travelling in similar regions of space. A priori information to the estimation scheme include ranging measurements and a general knowledge of the onboard ADACS, although precise measurements are not required for ...

Thermospheric Density Variability and Forecast Model Development.

1997
Abstract : Thermospheric densities derived from SETA-1, SETA-2 and SETA-3 accelerometer data, and cross track winds from SETA-1, were analyzed to determine the nature of latitudinal structures at latitudes greater than 45 degrees. Distinct dependencies on magnetic activity level, local time, hemisphere and season are revealed.

Density and composition of the lower thermosphere

Journal of Geophysical Research, 1973
This paper presents a new median model of the lower thermosphere. It is based on a critical evaluation of all the measurements of density and composition in this region and carries forward the process of re-examination begun by von Zahn in this 1970 paper.

Thermosphere density from accelerometer and GNSS data

Thermosphere density is one of the largest sources of uncertainty in the orbit estimation and prediction for satellites in low Earth orbit. With the rapidly growing number of satellites in this region, accurate knowledge of thermosphere density is becoming increasingly important for e.g.

Machine learning-based approach for thermospheric density prediction

For satellites at low altitudes, atmospheric drag is the dominant non-conservative perturbation force and is the most difficult cause for predicting the orbits of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites. Among all the factors affecting the drag force, thermospheric density is presently the predominantly uncertain term. This dissertation presents a significant
