Red Thick Disks of Nearby Galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astronomical Journal, 2005
Edge on systems reveal the properties of disk galaxies as a function of height, z, above the plane. Four local edge-on galaxies, that are close enough to have been resolved into stars by the Hubble Space Telescope, show thick disks, composed of a red stellar population, which is old and relatively metal rich.

MAPPING THE ASYMMETRIC THICK DISK. II. DISTANCE, SIZE, AND MASS OF THE HERCULES THICK DISK CLOUD [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astronomical Journal, 2011
The Hercules Thick Disk Cloud (Larsen et al. 2008) was initially discovered as an excess in the number of faint blue stars between quadrants 1 and 4 of the Galaxy. The origin of the Cloud could be an interaction with the disk bar, a triaxial thick disk or a merger remnant or stream. To better map the spatial extent of the Cloud along the line of sight,

Enhancing the Age‐Hardening Response of Laser Powder‐Bed Fusion WE43 Alloy through Microstructural Control

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Laser powder‐bed fusion (L‐PBF) can produce dense WE43 magnesium alloy parts, but their mechanical properties are limited by a nonhomogeneous microstructure. This study investigates the effects of varying direct aging (T5) and artificial age‐hardening (T6) conditions on microstructure and strength. Optimized T6 treatment significantly improves strength

Axisymmetric elasticity solution for an undrained saturated poro-piezoelastic thick disk [PDF]

open access: yesTheoretical and Applied Mechanics, 2019
In this paper, a circular thick plate made of poroelastic piezoelectric ceramic is studied. The porosities of the plate vary through the thickness and axisymmetric behavior of a piezoelectric disk exhibiting hexagonal material symmetry of class 6 mm ...

Influence of Temperature on Scratch and Wear Properties of Technical Thermoplastics: Implications for Material Selection

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The share of technical thermoplastics is expected to grow further in the e‐mobility segment. In this study, a detailed temperature‐based tribological characterization of technical thermoplastics is performed. The tribological properties are discussed in terms of the dynamic mechanical properties of polymers at different ambient temperatures. A proof of

Carbon, nitrogen and $\alpha$-element abundances determine the formation sequence of the Galactic thick and thin disks

open access: yes, 2015
Using the DR12 public release of APOGEE data, we show that thin and thick disk separate very well in the space defined by [$\alpha$/Fe], [Fe/H] and [C/N].

Oxygen Abundances in Nearby FGK Stars and the Galactic Chemical Evolution of the Local Disk and Halo [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Atmospheric parameters and oxygen abundances of 825 nearby FGK stars are derived using high-quality spectra and a non-LTE analysis of the 777 nm O I triplet lines. We assign a kinematic probability for the stars to be thin-disk (P1), thick-disk (P2), and

Numerical simulation of a possible origin of the positive radial metallicity gradient of the thick disk [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
We analyze the radial and vertical metallicity and [α/Fe] gradients of the disk stars of a disk galaxy simulated in a fully cosmological setting with the chemo-dynamical galaxy evolution code GCD+.

The Emergence of the Thick Disk in a Cold Dark Matter Universe [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2004
The disk galaxy simulated using our chemodynamic galaxy formation code, GCD+, is shown to have a thick-disk component. This is evidenced by the velocity dispersion versus age relation for solar neighborhood stars, which clearly shows an abrupt increase in velocity dispersion at a look-back time of approximately 8 Gyr, and is in excellent agreement with

Tribology of ZrC Coatings and Spherical Tips Acquired with Extraordinarily Stiff, Metal Atomic Force Microscopy Probes

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
In this research, ZrC coatings are evaluated against various counterprobes at the microscale using novel super‐stiff atomic force microscopy cantilevers. The chemical composition of the coating is shown to be an important factor influencing coating hardness and Young's modulus, while surface roughness, counterprobe hardness, and surface energy are the ...
