Fractional yields inferred from halo and thick disk stars [PDF]

open access: yesSerbian Astronomical Journal, 2013
Linear [Q/H]-[O/H] relations, Q = Na, Mg, Si, Ca, Ti, Cr, Fe, Ni, are inferred from a sample (N = 67) of recently studied FGK-type dwarf stars in the solar neighbourhood including different populations (Nissen and Schuster 2010, Ramirez et al ...

Origin of chemical and dynamical properties of the Galactic thick disk

open access: yes, 2011
We adopt a scenario in which the Galactic thick disk was formed by minor merging between the first generation of the Galactic thin disk (FGTD) and a dwarf galaxy about 9 Gyr ago and thereby investigate chemical and dynamical properties of the Galactic ...

Formation and Evolution of the Disk System of the Milky Way: [alpha/Fe] Ratios and Kinematics of the SEGUE G-Dwarf Sample

open access: yes, 2011
We employ measurements of the [alpha/Fe] ratio derived from low-resolution (R~2000) spectra of 17,277 G-type dwarfs from the SEGUE survey to separate them into likely thin- and thick-disk subsamples.

Dynamic Precipitation during High‐Pressure Torsion of a Magnesium–Manganese Alloy

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
An ultrafine‐grained alloy is produced by high‐pressure torsion of solutionized Mg–1.35 wt% Mn. Precipitation of nanometer‐scale Mn particles during deformation provides pinning sites. This prevents the formation of a bimodal grain structure and results in a finer grain size than for pure Mg.

Unveiling a Young Thick Disk in the Milky Way

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Letters
The thickness of a galaxy’s disk provides a valuable probe of its formation and evolution history. Observations of the Milky Way and local galaxies have revealed an ubiquitous disk structure with two distinctive components: an old thick disk and a ...

Observation of Disk Scattering Slab Modes Transitioning to Disk Scattering Modes on Metal–Dielectric Heterostructures in the Terahertz Waveband

open access: yesIEEE Photonics Journal, 2015
It has been demonstrated that, in the terahertz (THz) waveband, disk scattering slab modes (DSSMs) can exist in a heterostructure composed of a metallic subwavelength disk array coated on one surface of a dielectric slab.

The Panchromatic Hubble Andromeda Treasury. XX. The Disk of M31 is Thick

open access: yesThe Astronomical Journal, 2023
We present a new approach to measuring the thickness of a partially face-on stellar disk, using dust geometry. In a moderately-inclined disk galaxy, the fraction of reddened stars is expected to be 50% everywhere, assuming that dust lies in a thin ...

Is Young's Modulus a Critical Coating Property Determining Fouling‐Release Performance of Marine Coatings?

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The release of foulers from protective marine coatings is determined by several interrelated material properties, including the strength of Young's modulus, the flexibility of chain segments, the surface free energy, and the magnitude of hydrodynamic stress.
