The motion of a thick elastic plate, infinite in two dimensions and bounded by air on the two parallel faces, has been studied. The plate is excited at a point on one face, as in Lamb's problem, by a force impulsive in time, and directed normal to the surface. The early motions of this surface have been described by Lamb.

The high-frequency behavior of generalized ray arrivals is discussed with a view towards material characterization by means of measurements of the dispersion of ultrasonic pulses. The effect of beam spreading is treated exactly. Signal processing algorithms are developed. They are demonstrated with a synthetic signal obtained in an elastic material.

The plate is infinite in extent and bounded by two parallel planes located at, say, x 2 ± h, as shown in Fig. 10. For our purposes, both faces of the plate may (or may not) be completely coated with electrodes which are infinitesimally thin. Since the electrodes are infinitesimally thin, all possible mechanical effects may be ignored.
