A high-sensitivity, dual-plate, thickness-shear mode pressure sensor

IEEE Transactions on Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics and Frequency Control, 2006
We propose a dual-plate pressure sensor operating with pressure-induced frequency shifts of thickness-shear modes of a crystal plate resonator. Under an applied normal pressure. The dual-plate structure causes flexure in the crystal plate rather than circumferential compression in usual thickness-shear pressure sensors. This suggests higher sensitivity

One-step thickness shear mode acoustic assay for plasminogen activators

The Analyst, 2008
A new procedure is presented for the measurement of plasminogen activators using a thickness shear mode sensor and a modified version of the fibrin plate assay at the micro-scale. Separate, well-mixed solutions of the substrates fibrinogen and plasminogen, and enzymes thrombin and the plasminogen activator sample were mixed together and placed on the ...

Chemical Sensitivity of the Thickness‐Shear‐Mode Quartz‐Resonator Nanobalance

Journal of The Electrochemical Society, 1996
The thickness-shear-mode quartz resonator, known as an electrochemical quartz-crystal nanobalance (EQCN), is widely used as a mass-sensitive detector in microgravimetry electrochemical experiments. Using the acoustic-wave model, we show that in experiments where the load film is involved in some chemical reaction, the resonance-frequency shifts are due

Acoustic wave flow sensor using quartz thickness shear mode resonator

IEEE Transactions on Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics and Frequency Control, 2009
A quartz thickness shear mode (TSM) bulk acoustic wave resonator was used for in situ and real-time detection of liquid flow rate in this study. A special flow chamber made of 2 parallel acrylic plates was designed for flow measurement. The flow chamber has a rectangular flow channel, 2 flow reservoirs for stabilizing the fluid flow, a sensor mounting ...

Thickness-shear and thickness-twist modes in an AT-cut quartz acoustic wave filter

Ultrasonics, 2015
We studied thickness-shear and thickness-twist vibrations of a monolithic, two-pole crystal filter made from a plate of AT-cut quartz. The scalar differential equations derived by Tiersten and Smythe for electroded and unelectroded quartz plates were employed which are valid for both the fundamental and the overtone modes.

Use of thickness-shear mode in adaptive sandwich structures

Smart Materials and Structures, 1995
A new adaptive sandwich structure is constructed using the shear mode of piezoelectric materials. A comparative study of the sandwich structure and the corresponding surface-mounted actuation structure is performed using finite-element analysis. The effects of actuator length and location on actuation performance of the structures are studied.

High order shear horizontal modes for minimum remnant thickness

Ultrasonics, 2014
Thickness mapping in aging structures suffering from corrosion is challenging especially when the structure is only partially accessible. In plates the high order shear horizontal guided wave modes all have a cutoff frequency thickness product below which they cannot propagate.

Thickness-Shear and Thickness-Twist Modes in Quartz Plates with Incomplete Electrodes

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1966
Thin vacuum-deposited metallic electrodes on piezoelectric plates may be used to bind the acoustic energy associated with thickness-shear and thickness-twist modes to the electroded portion of the vibrating plates. In addition, by proper choice of the electrode area, the amplitude of the anharmonic series of thickness-shear and -twist modes may be ...

Optical Behavior of Thickness Shear Mode Quartz Crystal Resonator

Japanese Journal of Applied Physics, 2002
In this study, we fabricated the optical system of merocyanine dye (MD) using the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) method with various mixing ratios and numbers of layers to control its optical characteristics. We used quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) measurements and UV-visible spectroscopy to monitor and analyze the adsorption process of MD LB film ...

Theoretical modeling of a thickness-shear mode circular cylinder piezoelectric transformer

IEEE Transactions on Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics and Frequency Control, 2007
We propose a piezoelectric transformer operating with thickness-shear modes of a circular cylinder and perform a theoretical analysis on the transformer. An exact solution from the three-dimensional equations of piezoelectricity is obtained. The output voltage, input admittance, and efficiency of the transformer are determined.
