Dual-comb thin-disk oscillator [PDF]

open access: yesNature Communications, 2022
Achieving high output powers in dual-comb sources is important for possible applications like deep UV high resolution spectroscopy. Here the authors demonstrate a fully passive scheme of generating a set of high-power dual-combs from a thin-disc gain ...

Chemical constraints on the formation of the Galactic thick disk [PDF]

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2012
We highlight some results from our detailed abundance analysis study of 703 kinematically selected F and G dwarf stars in the solar neighbourhood. The analysis is based on spectra of high-resolution (R = 45000 to 110 000) and high signal-to-noise (S/N ...

110 MW Thin-Disk Oscillator [PDF]

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2022
A compact Kerr-lens mode-locked thin-disk oscillator reproducibly delivering 110 MW output peak power, the highest among all oscillators, is reported. This simple and stable femtosecond oscillator delivering a unique combination of high average power (202 W) and peak power, is an ideal driver and an important milestone for the development of extreme ...

Thick-disk evolution induced by the growth of an embedded thin disk [PDF]

open access: yesAstrophys.J.718:314-330,2010, 2009
We perform collisionless N-body simulations to investigate the evolution of the structural and kinematical properties of simulated thick disks induced by the growth of an embedded thin disk. The thick disks used in the present study originate from cosmologically-common 5:1 encounters between initially-thin primary disk galaxies and infalling satellites.

Lick Indices in the Thin and Thick Disks of Edge-On Disk Galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2008
We have measured Lick index equivalent widths to derive luminosity weighted stellar ages and metallicities for thin and thick disk dominated regions of 9 edge-on disk galaxies with the ARC 3.5 meter telescope at Apache Point Observatory. In all cases, the thick disks are confirmed to be old stellar populations, with typical ages between 4 and 10 Gyr ...

Hydrodynamical activity in thin accretion disks [PDF]

open access: yesNew Astron.Rev.51:819-827,2008, 2008
An asymptotic treatment of thin accretion disks, introduced by Klu\'zniak & Kita (2000) for a steady-state disk flow, is extended to a time-dependent problem. Transient growth of axisymmetric disturbances is analytically shown to occur on the global disk scale.

Structural Parameters of Thin and Thick Disks in Edge-On Disk Galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesAstron.J.131:226-249,2006, 2005
We analyze the global structure of 34 late-type, edge-on, undisturbed, disk galaxies spanning a wide range of mass. We measure structural parameters for the galaxies using two-dimensional least-squares fitting to our $R$-band photometry. The fits require both a thick and a thin disk to adequately fit the data.

Are there thin accretion disks?

open access: green, 2004
Total and internal energy requirements set constraints on the allowable temperature on the disk. In a gas pressure dominated disk, they lead to a cooling rate that decreases with temperature. These findings are used to show that the flow is mildly supersonic, with the azimuthal Mach number moderately exceeding one in a large extent of the disk. Only in

High-efficiency 100-W Kerr-lens mode-locked Yb:YAG thin-disk oscillator

open access: yesFrontiers in Physics, 2023
We demonstrate a Kerr-lens mode-locked femtosecond Yb:YAG thin-disk oscillator and investigate the approach to increase the optical-to-optical efficiency based on the scheme of direct multiple passes of the laser beam through the thin-disk medium.
