CdTe and CuIn1−xGaxSe2−ySy (CIGSS) are ideal candidates for thin-film solar cells. Present photovoltaic (PV) conversion efficiencies of champion thin-film solar cells are: CuIn1−xGaxSe2 (CIGS) 19.5%, CdTe 16.5%, and a-Si:H 12.4%. Thin-film PV modules could spearhead production growth of photovoltaics in the United States because of their added ...

A small random-access memory using deposited magnetic thin films as storage elements, and with a cycle time of one microsecond, is described. Information is read from or written into the memory by linear or word selection techniques. The addressing, driving and sensing circuits are transistorized.

The breakup of a free thin liquid film subjected to an impulsive acceleration is investigated. A soap film is stretched on a frame at the exit of a shock tube. As the shock impacts the film, the film accelerates within a very short time and detaches from the frame at a constant velocity function of the shock strength.

On the ferromagnetism of thin films
Czechoslovak Journal of Physics, 1960In this paper the magnetic properties of ferromagnetic thin layers are studied by calculating the partition function for the magnetic system inKirkwood's approximation of the second order. The results obtained for the Curie temperature and the magnetization are in somewhat better agreement with the experiment than those obtained by Valenta.

Optical thin films are coatings of amorphous, crystalline or polymerized materials, in single or multiple layers, on surfaces of optical components such as lenses and mirrors. These thin film coatings are used in optics to reduce reflections from optical parts (antireflection coatings) or to provide highly reflective surfaces (dielectric mirrors), as ...

While any subject associated with films evokes immediate thoughts about solid-state devices, there are other much more mature areas where it is important, such as coatings, and yet work on this entire subject is only in its infancy. Residual stresses are not only important because of their well-known effect on corrosion and mechanical properties, they ...
