Abstract The development of suitable micro actuators is a key challenge in the area of micro- machines or microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). A successful micro actuator must develop a large work output from a smaller and smaller volume, and therefore work output per unit volume is a key figure of merit for any actuator material.
