Sounds of protest from demonstrating nurses and health workers on their "day of action" penetrated the Commons committee room where the social services select committee was grappling sedately with the same issue. Each in its fashion is part of the democratic process, though it is arguable which has more impact on the government. But in a week that also

Engineering New‐to‐Nature Biological Pathways for β,γ‐Alkanediol Synthesis
β,γ‐Alkanediols are value‐added chemicals to be used as functional solvents, biofuels, and cosmetic components. This work demonstrates a carboligation‐mediated approach for synthesis of linear chain β,γ‐alkanediols in Escherichia coli, namely, hexane‐2,3‐diol (2,3‐HDO) and pentane‐2,3‐diol (2,3‐PDO). The engineered E. coli cells produce 152.2 mm (17.98

The results showed that the reduction of plasma 24‐hydroxycholesterol (24‐OHC) was related to the cognitive decline in elderly surgical patients. Neuroinflammation induced by anesthesia and surgery significantly downregulated SREBP2 in hippocampal reactive astrocytes, resulting in reduced cholesterol synthesis.

Hepatocyte BDNF Acts as a Novel Immune Checkpoint to Restrain TLR4‐Mediated Acute Hepatitis
This study identifies hepatocyte‐derived BDNF as an endogenous TLR4 antagonist that alleviates acute hepatitis. BDNF is downregulated in hepatocytes via REST‐mediated transcriptional repression during ALI/ALF. Mechanistically, BDNF binds to TLR4 on macrophages to suppress inflammation.
