From thin objects to thin concepts?

open access: yesTheoria, 2023
AbstractIn this short paper we consider Linnebo's thin/thick dichotomy: first, we show that it does not overlap with the very common one between abstract/concrete objects; second, on the basis of some difficulties with the distinction, we propose, as a possible way out, to move from thin/thick objects to thin/thick concepts.

The thinning of lamellae in surfactant-free foams with non-Newtonian liquid phase [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Thinning rates of liquid lamellae in surfactant-free non-Newtonian gas–liquid foams, appropriate for ceramic or polymer melts and also in metals near the melting point, are derived in two dimensions by matched asymptotic analysis valid at small capillary

Residual analysis methods for space--time point processes with applications to earthquake forecast models in California [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Modern, powerful techniques for the residual analysis of spatial-temporal point process models are reviewed and compared. These methods are applied to California earthquake forecast models used in the Collaboratory for the Study of Earthquake ...

Thin buildings [PDF]

open access: yesGeometry & Topology, 2006
Let X be a building of uniform thickness q+1. L^2-Betti numbers of X are reinterpreted as von-Neumann dimensions of weighted L^2-cohomology of the underlying Coxeter group. The dimension is measured with the help of the Hecke algebra. The weight depends on the thickness q.

Thin Lenses and Thin Cameras

open access: yes, 2021
Cassegrain designs can be used to build thin lenses. We analyze the relationships between system thickness and aperture sizes of the two mirrors as well as FoV size. Our analysis shows that decrease in lens thickness imposes tight constraint on the aperture and FoV size.

Polymeric filament thinning and breakup in microchannels [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
The effects of elasticity on filament thinning and breakup are investigated in microchannel cross flow. When a viscous solution is stretched by an external immiscible fluid, a low 100 ppm polymer concentration strongly affects the breakup process ...

Chemical thinning of 'Conference' pears [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The increasing difference in the market value of small and larger sized ‘Conference’ pears (>65 mm) and the high labour costs for hand thinning, makes it interesting for growers to find a cheaper and reliable method for thinning pear trees. In 2007, 2008

Carbon accretion in unthinned and thinned young-growth forest stands of the Alaskan perhumid coastal temperate rainforest. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
BACKGROUND: Accounting for carbon gains and losses in young-growth forests is a key part of carbon assessments. A common silvicultural practice in young forests is thinning to increase the growth rate of residual trees. However, the effect of thinning on
