This chapter considers the Thompson's group F. Thompson's group F exhibits several behaviors that appear paradoxical. For example: F is finitely presented and contains a copy of F x F, indicating that F contains the direct sum of infinitely many copies of F. In addition, F has exponential growth but contains no free groups of rank 2. After providing an

The Maximal Subgroups of the Thompson Group
Journal of the London Mathematical Society, 1989This paper completes the determination of the maximal subgroups of Thompson's simple group Th. This builds on work of the reviewer [J. Aust. Math. Soc., Ser. A 44, 17-32 (1988; Zbl 0641.20016)] in which the local subgroups and some other subgroups were classified. It turns out that in addition to those subgroups listed in the ``Atlas of Finite Groups''
