Surgical repair via submammary thoracotomy, right axillary thoracotomy and median sternotomy for ventricular septal defects

open access: yesJournal of Cardiothoracic Surgery, 2018
BackgroundRight submammary thoracotomy and right vertical infra-axillary thoracotomy are performed for ventricular septal defect (VSD) to reduce the invasiveness of the conventional surgical repair through median sternotomy approach.

Microaxial pump‐supported coronary surgery without CPB to optimize outcome in severely impaired left ventricles

open access: yesESC Heart Failure, EarlyView.
Abstract Aims Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) is the standard approach for coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) in advanced ischaemic cardiomyopathy. Microaxial pump support has been envisioned to allow for beating‐heart CABG without CPB (MPCAB), thereby avoiding CPB‐inherent complications.

Minimally Invasive Procedure versus Conventional Redo Sternotomy for Mitral Valve Surgery in Patients with Previous Cardiac Surgery: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

open access: yesJournal of Chest Surgery, 2023
Background: The heightened morbidity and mortality associated with repeat cardiac surgery are well documented. Redo median sternotomy (MS) and minimally invasive valve surgery are options for patients with prior cardiac surgery who require mitral valve

Identification of serum C4BPA as a potential diagnostic marker of right ventricular remodelling via proteomic analysis

open access: yesESC Heart Failure, EarlyView.
Abstract Aims Right ventricular (RV) remodelling, a progressive condition characterized by maladaptive cardiac structural and functional changes, primarily results from prolonged pressure overload in patients with pulmonary hypertension (PH). Accurate, universal and easy‐to‐use biomarkers for assessing the severity of RV remodelling are lacking.

Percutaneous Removal of a Pulmonary Artery Catheter Inadvertently Sutured to the Heart During Valve Surgery

open access: yesJACC: Case Reports, 2020
A 74-year old woman underwent “mini-mitral” valve surgery via a right thoracotomy. The pulmonary artery catheter could not be removed thereafter and was found to be pierced by the atriotomy suture.

Video assisted thoracic surgery vs. thoracotomy for locally advanced lung squamous cell carcinoma after neoadjuvant chemotherapy

open access: yesJournal of Cardiothoracic Surgery, 2018
BackgroundSurgery is an important part of multidisciplinary treatment strategy for locally advanced lung squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC), but insufficient evidence supports the feasibility and safety of video assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) following ...

Left ventricular decompression in paediatric veno‐arterial extracorporeal life support: Reviewing the evidence

open access: yesESC Heart Failure, EarlyView.
Abstract Veno‐arterial extracorporeal life support (VA ECLS) is crucial for neonatal and paediatric patients with severe circulatory collapse but may cause left ventricular (LV) overload, affecting myocardial recovery and causing complications. Evidence on optimal LV decompression strategies in paediatric patients remains limited.

THORACOTOMY: A SIMPLIFIED TECHNIC [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of the American Medical Association, 1919
The recent occurrence of epidemic diseases among the new troops in some of the cantonments was associated with an unusually large number of cases of pleural effusions, many of which developed into empyema. A large percentage of these empyema patients required surgical intervention. Some were successfully treated by aspiration alone.
