An evaluation of the relative efficacy of an open airway, an oxygen reservoir and continuous positive airway pressure 5 cmH2O on the non-ventilated lung [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
Publisher's copy made available with the permission of the publisher © Australian Society of AnaesthetistsThe aim of this study, during one-lung ventilation, was to evaluate if oxygenation could be improved by use of a simple oxygen reservoir or ...

Co‐Electrospinning Extracellular Matrix with Polycaprolactone Enables a Modular Approach to Balance Bioactivity and Mechanics of a Multifunctional Bone Wrap

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
The incorporation of nondigested ECM and synthetic polymers into a co‐electrospinning system enables the decoupling of bioactivity and mechanical properties within a single wrap. This technique is used to develop a multifunctional bone wrap that achieves augmented membrane durability, sustained infection control, and enhanced vascularity for use in ...

Impact of goal-directed fluid therapy on serum cytokines (IL-2, IFN-g, TNF-a, IL-6, IL-8, and IL-10) in elderly patients undergoing thoracotomy [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Medical Biochemistry
Background: This research aimed to investigate the effect of different fluid therapy approaches (conventional and goal-directed fluid management) on TH1 and TH 2 cytokines (IL-2, IFN-g, TN F-a, IL-6, and IL-8, IL-10) during the perioperative period of ...

Potent Liver‐Tropic mRNA Lipid Nanoparticles: ApoE‐Mediated Delivery Through a Low‐Density Lipoprotein Receptor Independent Uptake Mechanism

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Helper and ionizable lipids play a crucial role in determining ApoE binding and subsequent liver tropism and LDLR‐mediated uptake. Ionizable lipids primarily govern the LDLR‐independent uptake pathway. This complementary interplay between lipid components ultimately governs LNP delivery performance and therapeutic efficacy in the liver.

Rethinking Perioperative Corticosteroids in Esophageal Cancer Surgery: Evidence From an Integrative Meta‐Analysis

open access: yesAnnals of Gastroenterological Surgery, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Esophagectomy remains a highly invasive procedure associated with substantial postoperative morbidity. Pulmonary complications, anastomotic leakage, and in‐hospital mortality are of particular concern. Perioperative corticosteroids are often administered to attenuate excessive inflammatory responses; however, the clinical impact in ...

Prediction of Major Adverse Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Events (MACCE) after Thoracic Surgery: The Role of Estimated GFR [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research, 2017
Introducton: Little is known about the prognostic utility of preoperative estimated GFR (eGFR) on perioperative Major Adverse Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Events (MACCE) in apparently lower risk patients undergoing moderate risk surgeries like ...

Creation of ventricular septal defects on the beating heart in a new pig model [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Background/ Aims: So far, surgical and interventional therapies for muscular ventricular septal defects ( mVSDs) beyond the moderator band have had their limitations. Thus, alternative therapeutic strategies should be developed.

Risks and Benefits of Feeding Enterostomy Creation During Minimally Invasive Esophagectomy: A Propensity‐Weighted Analysis Using the Japanese National Clinical Database

open access: yesAnnals of Gastroenterological Surgery, EarlyView.
Feeding enterostomy during MIE was evaluated in 19 054 patients from the Japanese NCD using propensity weighting. Enterostomy was associated with higher reoperation and respiratory complications, but lower delayed gastric emptying and deep vein thrombosis, with no significant difference in overall bowel obstruction.
