A method for the determination of thoron and thoron progeny concentration at workplaces and thoron concentration in calibration chambers

Radiation Protection Dosimetry, 2008
A new method to determine the air concentration of (220)Rn, commonly referred to as thoron, has been developed. The method is insensitive to the presence of any concentration of (222)Rn. Air turbulence, humidity and temperature do not influence the measurement.

Contribution of Thoron and Its Progeny to the Effective Dose by Inhalation in the Uranium-Thorium Bearing Regions of Mayo Kebbi and Guéra in Chad

Health Physics
In recent years, technological developments and hypotheses made by some researchers have revealed that the effective inhalation dose from thoron and its progeny was underestimated.

Simultaneous measurements of radon, thoron and thoron progeny and induced cancer risk assessment in Djeno, Pointe-Noire, Republic of Congo.

Radiation Protection Dosimetry
In this study, the activity concentrations of radon (222Rn), thoron (220Rn) and thoron progeny were measured simultaneously in Djeno (Pointe-Noire, Republic of Congo) using RADUET detectors to evaluate the air quality and the radiological risks due to ...

Deposition and spatial variation of thoron decay products in a thoron experimental house using the Direct Thoron Progeny Sensors

Journal of Radiological Protection, 2017
Experiments have been carried out using the deposition-based Direct Thoron Progeny Sensors (DTPS) in a thoron experimental house. The objective was to study the thoron decay product characteristics such as the deposition velocities, spatial variability and dependence on aerosol particle concentrations.

Optimization of the thoron progeny compensation system of a thoron calibration chamber

Journal of Radioanalytical and Nuclear Chemistry, 2020
The long-term stability and homogeneity of thoron progeny are key to the performance of a thoron calibration chamber, which is vital to quality assurance in measuring thoron progeny. It is difficult to build a stable and high level of thoron progeny because the half-life of 212Pb is long. Thus, a stable and efficient compensation system is necessary to

Simulation of thoron and thoron progeny concentrations in the indoor environment

Journal of Building Physics, 2011
Thoron (220Rn) exhalation from building materials has become increasingly recognized as a potential source for radiation exposure in domestic houses. However, contrary to radon (222Rn), little is known about the exposure to thoron and its short-lived decay products.

International intercomparisons of integrating radon/thoron detectors with the NIRS radon/thoron chambers

Radiation Protection Dosimetry, 2010
Intercomparisons of radon/thoron detectors play an important role not only for domestic radon/thoron survey but also for international or interregional discussion about radon/thoron mapping in dwellings as well as that in the soil. For these purposes, it is necessary to improve and standardise technical methods of measurement and to verify quality ...

Comparative dosimetry of radon and thoron

Radiation Protection Dosimetry, 2010
There is a well-known discrepancy between dosimetrically derived dose conversion factor (DCF) and epidemiologically derived DCF for radon. As the latter DCFs, International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) recommends a value of ∼6.4 nSv (Bq h m(-3))(-1) and 7.9 nSv (Bq h m(-3))(-1) for radon decay products (RnDP) in dwellings and workplaces,

Thoron half-life

Journal of Inorganic and Nuclear Chemistry, 1966
Abstract The half-lives of thoron and actinon have been redetermined using a detector which depends on charcoal particle adsorption of the gas and measurement of the α-particles by scintillation screen, photomultiplier techniques. The new value for thoron half-life is 55·61 ± 0·04 sec, and the new value for actinon is 3·96 ± 0·01 sec.

Preparation of a radon-free thoron source for a thoron calibration chamber

Journal of Radioanalytical and Nuclear Chemistry, 2016
During long-term radon/thoron surveys, solid-state nuclear track detectors (SSNTDs) are commonly used. For the application of these integral devices, it is important to solve the commensurate calibration. At the calibration process, radon can be interfering with thoron; therefore, radon-free thoron atmosphere is required for the accurate calibration ...
