Cities are hotspots for threatened species [PDF]

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Biogeography, 2015
AbstractAimAlthough urbanization impacts many species, there is little information on the patterns of occurrences of threatened species in urban relative to non‐urban areas. By assessing the extent of the distribution of threatened species across all Australian cities, we aim to investigate the currently under‐utilized opportunity that cities present ...

The threatened status of restricted-range coral reef fish species [PDF]

open access: green, 2000
Coral reefs are the most diverse ecosystem in the sea. Throughout the world they are being overfished, polluted and destroyed, placing biodiversity at risk.

Predicting the Impact of Climate Change on Threatened Species in UK Waters [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Global climate change is affecting the distribution of marine species and is thought to represent a threat to biodiversity. Previous studies project expansion of species range for some species and local extinction elsewhere under climate change.

Breakthrough Solution for Antimicrobial Resistance Detection: Surface‐Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy‐based on Artificial Intelligence

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView., 2023
This review discusses the use of Surface‐Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) combined with Artificial Intelligence (AI) for detecting antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Various SERS studies used with AI techniques, including machine learning and deep learning, are analyzed for their advantages and limitations.

Island characteristics and sampling methodologies influence the use of stable isotopes as an ecosystem function assessment tool

open access: yesEcological Solutions and Evidence, 2021
Monitoring seabird‐derived nutrients on islands following invasive mammal eradications may provide a useful, cost‐ and time‐efficient indication of the recovery of ecosystem function; however, the technique has only been investigated on environmentally ...

Adaptive survival movement strategy to local epidemic outbreaks in cyclic models [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Physics: Complexity 3, 045008 (2022), 2022
We study the generalised rock-paper-scissors game with five species whose organisms face local epidemic outbreaks. As an evolutionary behavioural survival strategy, organisms of one out of the species move in the direction with more enemies of their enemies to benefit from protection against selection.

Combination of survival movement strategies in cyclic game systems during an epidemic [PDF]

open access: yesBiosystems 217, 104689 (2022), 2022
Disease outbreaks affect many ecosystems threatening species that also fight against other natural enemies. We investigate a cyclic game system with $5$ species, whose organisms outcompete according to the rules of a generalised spatial rock-paper-scissors game, during an epidemic.

Taxonomic research priorities for the conservation of the South African flora

open access: yesSouth African Journal of Science, 2013
Taxonomic revisions, monographs and floras are the most important, and often the only source of data for assessing the extinction risk of plants, with recent revisions contributing to more accurate assessments.

Assessing Risks to Wildlife from Free-Roaming Hybrid Cats: The Proposed Introduction of Pet Savannah Cats to Australia as a Case Study

open access: yesAnimals, 2019
Hybrid cats—created by crossing different species within the family Felidae—are popular pets, but they could potentially threaten native species if they escape and establish free-roaming populations.
