Utility of Preoperative Cardiac Workup for Children With Very Severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea

open access: yesThe Laryngoscope, EarlyView.
In this retrospective study, we aimed to examine the prevalence and utility of obtaining a preoperative cardiac workup in children with very severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) prior to adenotonsillectomy. Of 144 patients with very severe OSA, 38 patients (26.4%) underwent a preoperative cardiac workup, and three of those 38 had abnormal findings ...

Nonthermal plasma approaches for combating implant‐associated infections: A compendious review

open access: yesVIEW, EarlyView.
Implant‐associated infections pose serious clinical challenges. Non‐thermal plasma (NTP) modifications overcome this bottleneck in distinct ways relative to traditional sterilization methods. Gas‐phase plasmas generate highly energetic species, UV radiation and reactive oxygen/nitrogen species (RONS), which alter the implant surface properties.

Three-dimensional echocardiography in ischemic heart disease

open access: yes, 1998
The ability of two-dimensional echocardiography to detect and to evaluate the extent of wall motion abnormalities is limited by the use of few selected, nonparallel, views of the whole left ventricle, This leads to an incomplete appreciation of the ...

Three-dimensional echocardiography in coronary artery disease [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
Two-dimensional echocardiography has proven to be a very useful tool in the evaluation of global and regional left ventricular function in patients with coronary artcry disease.

Feasibility of pulmonary valve imaging using three-dimensional transthoracic echocardiography

open access: yes, 2010
Background: The pulmonary valve (PV) is rarely visualized in short axis with conventional two-dimensional transthoracic echocardiography (TTE). Thus, the true incidence of abnormal PV morphology in patients undergoing TTE is unknown. This study sought to

Data privacy model using blockchain reinforcement federated learning approach for scalable internet of medical things

open access: yesCAAI Transactions on Intelligence Technology, EarlyView.
Abstract Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) has typical advancements in the healthcare sector with rapid potential proof for decentralised communication systems that have been applied for collecting and monitoring COVID‐19 patient data. Machine Learning algorithms typically use the risk score of each patient based on risk factors, which could help ...

Comparison of Echocardiographic Single-Plane versus Biplane Method in the Assessment of Left Atrial Volume and Validation by Real Time Three-Dimensional Echocardiography

open access: yes, 2010
The American Society of Echocardiography recommends calculating left atrial (LA) biplane volume because of its greater accuracy and prognostic value over LA diameter. However, biplane methods are not always feasible.

Pulmonary artery catheters or central venous catheters for cardiac surgery: the PUMA Pilot randomised clinical trial

open access: yesAnaesthesia, EarlyView.
Summary Introduction Pulmonary artery catheters are used widely in cardiac surgery despite observed associations with worse outcomes and guidelines that recommend against their routine use. No adequately powered randomised trials are available. Methods The PUMA Pilot was a multicentre, randomised, parallel assignment, open‐label, pilot and feasibility ...

Validation of Aortic Blood Flow Simulations During Extracorporeal Circulation Using Phase Contrast Magnetic Resonance Imaging

open access: yesArtificial Organs, EarlyView.
This is the first study assessing in vivo blood flow profiles during extracorporeal circulation (ECC) scenarios. Magnetic resonance imaging data served for the calibration of computational fluid dynamics algorithms, enabling accurate replication of the hemodynamic conditions.
