An improved three-point bending method by nanoindentation

Surface and Coatings Technology, 2003
Hard thin coatings are used at both ambient and high temperatures to protect the underlying components from aggressive environments such as corrosion and wear. Commercial hard thin coatings, developed by physical vapour deposition, are typically of the order of 5 μm thick or less but, in order to estimate the stresses generated in the coating when the ...

Three-point bending Young's modulus of nanowires

Measurement Science and Technology, 2008
The three-point bending Young's modulus (E) of nanowires was studied by a finite element method. It was found that the constraint conditions at the nanowire ends, the ratio of the suspended length of the wire to the wire diameter and the deflection of the wire all work together to contribute to the measurement errors of the Young's modulus. Yielding of

More on compliance of the three-point bend specimen

International Journal of Fracture, 1985
Abstract : Comparison and analysis of load-line displacement for the three-point bend specimen was performed. Expressions were developed for displacement as a function of crack length and for crack length as a function of displacement.

The Three-Point Bend Test for Adhesive Joints

1984
Unless a large amount of degradation has occurred in the interfacial region of a metal-to-metal adhesive bond, the T-peel and wedge opening test usually provide only mode I information on the bulk adhesive. The single-lap shear test shows primarily mixed-mode failure.

Bending of Thin Plate with Three‐Point Support

Journal of Structural Engineering, 1992
A series solution for stresses and displacements in a rectangular plate that is simply supported at three corners has been developed. Surprisingly simple and rigorous formulae for maximum displacement under arbitrary load are given. This is due to the fact that only one term in the series contributes to the displacement of the unsupported corner.

Three-Point Bending Test in Brittle Materials

2003
Consider a standard Three-Point Bending (TPB) test carried out on a pre-notched specimen of brittle polymeric material (PMMA). The test geometry is shown in Figure 1, (with dimensions in mm):

Strain response of an instrumented intramedullary nail to three-point bending

Journal of Medical Engineering & Technology, 2011
An experimental biomechanical evaluation of an instrumented intramedullary nail (TriGen® META Nail, Smith&Nephew®) was undertaken. The objectives were two-fold. The first was to identify the most sensitive strain gauge positions and orientations on the nail, and the second was to demonstrate that the nail was capable of detecting changes in stiffness ...

A three point bend tester for strong fibres

Journal of Physics E: Scientific Instruments, 1968
A three point bend tester suitable for measuring the flexural strength of short lengths of high strength fibres in the diameter range 10-50 μm is described. The theory of bending is discussed and it is shown that good estimates of the maximum strain in a bent fibre are possible for large amounts of bending without an accurate knowledge of the ...

Three‐point bending strength of ceramics fused to cast titanium

European Journal of Oral Sciences, 1996
Titanium requires special ceramic systems for veneering. This study compared the three‐point bending strength of three commercially available titanium ceramic systems with a NiCr‐alloy with conventional ceramics. Three‐point bend specimens 25 × 5 × 0.5 mm were cast from polyethylene patterns.

Fracture of Reinforced Concrete Beams Subjected to Three Point Bending

International Journal of Damage Mechanics, 2003
The present paper investigates deformation of three point bent reinforced concrete (RC) beams analytically (using fracture mechanics), computationally (using finite element method) and experimentally. As the applied force increases the crack is initially trapped by the reinforcement.
