Polynomial Threshold Functions, AC^0 Functions and Spectral Norms [PDF]

open access: yes, 1990
The class of polynomial-threshold functions is studied using harmonic analysis, and the results are used to derive lower bounds related to AC^0 functions.

Local Fault-tolerant Quantum Computation

open access: yes, 2005
We analyze and study the effects of locality on the fault-tolerance threshold for quantum computation. We analytically estimate how the threshold will depend on a scale parameter r which estimates the scale-up in the size of the circuit due to encoding ...

Correcting Velocity Dispersions of Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies for Binary Orbital Motion [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
We show that the measured velocity dispersions of dwarf spheroidal galaxies from about 4 to 10 km s^(–1) are unlikely to be inflated by more than 30% due to the orbital motion of binary stars and demonstrate that the intrinsic velocity dispersions can ...

In situ molecular organization and heterogeneity of the Legionella Dot/Icm T4SS

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present a nearly complete in situ model of the Legionella Dot/Icm type IV secretion system, revealing its central secretion channel and identifying new components. Using cryo‐electron tomography with AI‐based modeling, our work highlights the structure, variability, and mechanism of this complex nanomachine, advancing understanding of bacterial ...

An evaluation of thresholding techniques in fMRI analysis

open access: yesNeuroImage, 2004
This paper reviews and compares individual voxel-wise thresholding methods for identifying active voxels in single-subject fMRI datasets. Different error rates are described which may be used to calibrate activation thresholds. We discuss methods which control each of the error rates at a prespecified level alpha, including simple procedures which ...

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Two-colour quantum entanglement in a singly resonant optical parametric oscillator approaching threshold [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Following the analytical work of Ref. [1], a numerical analysis of squeezing and quantum entanglement in a continuous wave singly-resonant optical parametric oscillator approaching threshold is provided.

A study of the universal threshold in the L1 recovery by statistical mechanics

open access: yes, 2012
We discuss the universality of the L1 recovery threshold in compressed sensing. Previous studies in the fields of statistical mechanics and random matrix integration have shown that L1 recovery under a random matrix with orthogonal symmetry has a ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.
