Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Low-altitude economy development and high-quality agricultural development in China: spatial and nonlinear evidence

open access: yesFrontiers in Sustainable Food Systems
Using panel data for 30 provincial-level administrative regions in China from 2012 to 2022, this paper examines the relationship between low-altitude economy development (LAEDL) and high-quality agricultural development (HQAD), with particular attention ...

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Threshold effects of public procurement on Ghana’s economic development: A budgetary allocation perspective

open access: yesJournal of Transport and Supply Chain Management
Background: Public procurement is one of Ghana’s largest channels of public expenditure, yet institutional inefficiencies, corruption, and political interference limit its contribution to sustainable development. Empirical evidence on threshold effects –

Organizing the interface—Plasma membrane architecture and receptor dynamics in virus‐cell interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Plasma membranes contain dynamic nanoscale domains that organize lipids and receptors. Because viruses operate at similar scales, this architecture shapes early infection steps, including attachment, receptor engagement, and entry. Using influenza A virus and HIV‐1 as examples, we highlight how receptor nanoclusters, multivalent glycan interactions ...

Threshold effects in the finance–growth nexus: a dynamic panel GMM analysis

open access: yesJournal of Applied Economics
This study revisits the finance–growth nexus using panel data from 171 countries spanning 1980–2019. Its main contribution lies in applying a dynamic threshold GMM approach to five-year averages of financial development indicators, including the IMF ...

Design and analysis strategies for robust microbiome ageing research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The gut microbiome changes with age and associates with age‐related morbidity and mortality, establishing it as a potential biomarker and intervention target for ageing. Realising this potential requires methodological rigour, yet distinguishing biological signals from methodological artefacts remains challenging across cohorts. This review provides an

Panel threshold spatial Durbin models with individual fixed effects

open access: yes, 2021
This paper introduces a new panel threshold spatial Durbin (PTSD) model. A within-group spatial two-stage least squares estimator and a threshold test of the PTSD model are suggested. Simulation results show that the proposed estimator and test work well

Microbiome‐blood–brain barrier interactions in aging — mechanisms and therapeutic potential

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Aging reshapes the gut microbiome (↓SCFA‐producing commensals; ↑pro‐inflammatory outputs), shifting circulating metabolites (↓SCFAs; ↑LPS, ↑TMAO, ↑PAA) that act at the BBB to increase nonspecific transcytosis, alter transport, and promote astrocyte reactivity, heightening brain vulnerability.
