Pain threshold and pain tolerance as predictors of acute postoperative pain: Pain threshold and pain tolerance [PDF]

open access: yesSerbian Journal of Anesthesia and Intensive Therapy, 2023
Introduction Acute postoperative pain can lead to various complications, affecting cardiovascular, respiratory , gastrointestinal, and renal systems, increases the costs of treatment and affects patient satisfaction.

Pain Threshold and Arthritis [PDF]

open access: bronzeBMJ, 1972
Pain threshold was measured in 106 patients with rheumatoid arthritis, 50 with ankylosing spondylitis, and 50 normal controls using Keele's algometer. In rheumatoid arthritis patients with a low pain threshold had more severe pain for a greater part of the day and required more tablets for pain relief.

Pre-operative pain sensitivity: A prediction of post-operative outcome in the obstetric population [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Anaesthesiology Clinical Pharmacology, 2013
Context: Experimental assessments can determine pain threshold and tolerance, which mirror sensitivity to pain. This, in turn, influences the post-operative experience.

Pain threshold - measure of pain sensitivity or social behavior? [PDF]

open access: yesPsihologija, 2016
The aim was to examine the effect of the experimenter’s social status and its interaction with participant’s gender on pressure pain threshold. Both male and female students participated in the study (N = 96) and were evenly assigned into two ...

Quantitative and Qualitative Responses to Topical Cold in Healthy Caucasians Show Variance between Individuals but High Test-Retest Reliability. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2016
Increased sensitivity to cold may be a predictor of persistent pain, but cold pain threshold is often viewed as unreliable. This study aimed to determine the within-subject reliability and between-subject variance of cold response, measured ...

Tactile thresholds are preserved yet complex sensory function is impaired over the lumbar spine of chronic non-specific low back pain patients: a preliminary investigation [PDF]

open access: green, 2010
Objectives: To investigate impairments in sensory function in chronic non-specific low back pain patients and the relationship between any impairment and the clinical features of the condition. Design: A cross-sectional case-control study.

A Phase II, Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo Controlled, Dose-Response Trial of the Melatonin Effect on the Pain Threshold of Healthy Subjects. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2013
Previous studies have suggested that melatonin may produce antinociception through peripheral and central mechanisms. Based on the preliminary encouraging results of studies of the effects of melatonin on pain modulation, the important question has been ...

What colour is my arm? Changes in skin colour of an embodied virtual arm modulates pain threshold [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Human Neuroscience, 2013
It has been demonstrated that visual inputs can modulate pain. However, the influence of skin colour on pain perception is unknown. Red skin is associated to inflamed, hot and more sensitive skin while blue is associated to cold. We aimed to test whether

Evaluation of perception threshold and pain in patients with Parkinson’s disease using PainVision®

open access: yesFrontiers in Neurology, 2023
IntroductionPain is one of the most frequent non-motor symptoms occurring in patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Traditionally, the Visual Analog Pain Scale (VAS), Numerical Rating Scale (NRS), and Wong-Baker Faces Pain Rating Scale (FRS) have been ...

A cross-sectional analysis of persistent low back pain, using correlations between lumbar stiffness, pressure pain threshold, and heat pain threshold

open access: yesChiropractic & Manual Therapies, 2021
Introduction Little is known about the underlying biomechanical cause of low back pain (LBP). Recently, technological advances have made it possible to quantify biomechanical and neurophysiological measurements, potentially relevant factors in ...
