A single Haemoproteus plataleae haplotype is widespread in white ibis (Eudocimus albus) from urban and rural sites in southern Florida [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal for Parasitology: Parasites and Wildlife, 2023
The American white ibis (Eudocimus albus), a common bird species in Florida, has become increasingly urban, with many populations relying heavily on urban and suburban habitats, which may alter parasite transmission.

The genome sequence of the Eurasian Spoonbill, Platalea leucorodia Linnaeus, 1758 (Pelecaniformes: Threskiornithidae) [version 1; peer review: 2 approved] [PDF]

open access: yesWellcome Open Research
We present a genome assembly from an individual female Platalea leucorodia (Eurasian Spoonbill; Chordata; Aves; Pelecaniformes; Threskiornithidae). The assembly contains two haplotypes with total lengths of 1 345.83 megabases and 1 190.44 megabases. Most

Comparative chromosome maps between the stone curlew and three ciconiiform species (the grey heron, little egret and crested ibis) [PDF]

open access: yesBMC Ecology and Evolution, 2022
Background Previous cytogenetic studies show that the karyotypes of species in Ciconiiformes vary considerably, from 2n = 52 to 78. Their karyotypes include different numbers of small to minute bi-armed chromosomes that have evolved probably by fusions ...

A Derived Morphology of the Quadrate May Support a Previously Unrecognized Major Higher-Level Clade of Neoavian Birds. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Morphol
The avian quadrate plays a critical role in cranial kinesis, but few comparative studies exist of its morphological variation across higher‐level taxa. In this study, the occurrence of a markedly concave articular facet of the condylus medialis is surveyed across neornithine birds.

The complete mitochondrial genome of an Asian crested ibis Nipponia nippon (Pelecaniformes, Threskiornithidae) from South Korea [PDF]

open access: yesMitochondrial DNA. Part B. Resources, 2019
The complete mitochondrial genome sequence from the Asian crested ibis, Nipponia nippon (Aves, Pelecaniformes, Threskiornithidae), was determined and characterized in detail. This mitochondrial genome is 16,813 bp long, and consists of 13 PCGs, 22 tRNAs,

Diversity, Species Richness, and Community Composition of Wetland Birds in the Lowlands of Western Nepal. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
ABSTRACT Wetlands serve as crucial habitats for diverse bird species, playing a vital role in maintaining the ecosystem. Geographical location, climate, hydrology, and vegetation composition of wetlands determine the diversity of birds. This study investigated species richness, seasonal diversity, and composition of wetland birds in three prominent ...

Evolution and expression patterns of the neo-sex chromosomes of the crested ibis [PDF]

open access: yesNature Communications
Bird sex chromosomes play a unique role in sex-determination, and affect the sexual morphology and behavior of bird species. Core waterbirds, a major clade of birds, share the common characteristics of being sexually monomorphic and having lower levels ...

Host-feeding preferences of Culex pipiens and its potential significance for flavivirus transmission in the Camargue, France. [PDF]

open access: yesMed Vet Entomol
We identified Culex pipiens bloodmeals at the species level in natural, agricultural and peri‐urban habitats and calculated host preferences based on forage ratios. This analysis showed Passeriformes, and in particular Columba livia, Passer montanus and Turdus sp., to be the preferred Cx. pipiens hosts.
