Homozygous multiple‐insecticide resistance in Australian invasive serpentine leafminer Liriomyza huidobrensis (Blanchard) (Diptera: Agromyzidae)

open access: yesAustral Entomology, Volume 64, Issue 1, February 2025.
Abstract In October 2020, Liriomyza huidobrensis (serpentine leafminer [SLM]) was first detected in Western Sydney, New South Wales (NSW), and subsequently Southern Queensland (QLD). Control failures were reported, and insecticide resistance was confirmed via bioassay, but mechanisms causing resistance remained unknown.

CRISPR/Cas9‐mediated genome editing of Frankliniella occidentalis, the western flower thrips, via embryonic microinjection

open access: yesInsect Molecular Biology, Volume 33, Issue 6, Page 589-600, December 2024.
A robust methodology was developed to generate heritable mutations in a thysanopteran crop pest and virus vector (Frankliniella occidentalis, Fo) using the CRISPR/Cas9 system Two eye colour genes (Fo‐white and Fo‐cinnabar) were identified in the F. occidentalis genome to serve as targets of gene knockout with visible changes in eye pigmentation CRISPR ...

Commodity risk assessment of Petunia spp. and Calibrachoa spp. unrooted cuttings from Costa Rica

open access: yesEFSA Journal, Volume 22, Issue 11, November 2024.
Abstract The European Commission requested the EFSA Panel on Plant Health to evaluate the probability of entry of pests (likelihood of pest freedom at entry), including both regulated and non‐regulated pests, associated with unrooted cuttings of the genera Petunia and Calibrachoa produced under physical isolation in Costa Rica.

First report on honeydew excretion by the melon thrips, Thrips palmi karny (Thysanoptera : Thripidae) and its biochemical analysis

open access: yesJournal of Horticultural Sciences, 2020
Sap sucking insects like thrips, aphids, mealybugs, whiteflies exploit the sugar rich phloem for growth and development. The excess sugar in the phloem sap creates osmotic imbalance leading to loss of water from haemolymph to gut lumen.

Effect of sublethal concentrations of the bioinsecticide spinosyn treatment of Trichoplusia ni eggs on the caterpillar and its parasitoid, Trichogramma brassicae

open access: yesPest Management Science, Volume 80, Issue 6, Page 2965-2975, June 2024.
Eggs of the pest caterpillar Trichoplusia ni were exposed to sublethal concentrations of the bioinsecticide spinosyn. In the hatched caterpillars, genes encoding proteins involved in detoxification strategies were upregulated. Trichogramma brassicae wasps that emerged from these eggs had larger tibia length and wing area, suggesting higher performance.

Pest categorisation of Diaphania indica

open access: yesEFSA Journal, Volume 22, Issue 5, May 2024.
Abstract The EFSA Panel on Plant Health performed a pest categorisation of Diaphania indica (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), the cucumber moth for the territory of the European Union (EU), following the commodity risk assessment of Jasminum polyanthum from Uganda, in which D. indica was identified as a pest of possible concern to the European Union. D. indica
