Abstract Phlebitis in pregnancy is an ever-present challenge to the obstetrician for prophylaxis. early diagnosis, and treatment. In this study of 84 cases, early diagnosis of phlebitis was established in all but 2 patients whose presenting finding was pulmonary embolism. Local heat and elevation were used exclusively in 25 patients.

Records of 1,400 patients with the diagnosis of venous thrombosis or thrombophlebitis were reviewed. Eighty-one had associated cancer. In 61, the thrombophlebitis was diagnosed clinically; in 20, at autopsy. Fifty-one had carcinoma. Thrombophlebitis was recognized in 31 prior to the carcinoma.

At the present time the incidence of thrombophlebitis in postoperative cases is about 1 per cent. Among postoperative cases 11 per cent of fatalities are due to thromboembolic disease.
