Ferrohydrodynamic thrust bearings
International Journal of Engineering Science, 1979Abstract This paper treats thrust bearings in which the lubricant is a ferroliquid confined by an applied magnetic field to the gap between two plates, one fixed and one mounted on a rotating shaft carrying an axial load. For plates with plane, parallel surfaces, the lubricant extends beyond the edges of the plates and axially along their sides ...

The Tapered-Land Thrust Bearing
Journal of Applied Mechanics, 1956Abstract Neglecting side leakage the maximum load capacity which can be carried per unit width is obtained when there is a stepped convergence to the oil film. However, when side leakage is considered the stepped bearing is only slightly better than the tilting-pad bearing, this being due to the fact that the maximum oil pressure occurs ...

The magnetohydrodynamic thrust bearing
Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 1967The magnetohydrodynamic lubrication flow in a step-type thrust bearing has been investigated both theoretically and experimentally. The experimental configuration consisted of nine identical segments arranged on a circular plate. Flow was induced by rotating the upper plate. Pressures, voltages and torques were recorded.
