Rheumatoid arthritis of the thumb is a common source of disability. Obtaining an understanding of the underlying biologic and physical manifestations of rheumatoid arthritis is essential in the choice of treatment of the disease. In the early stages of the disease, conservative and less invasive measures can be used.

Thumb hypoplasia is part of a spectrum of radial longitudinal deficiencies involving the upper limb. Systemic involvement of other organ systems is not uncommon, thus requiring a team approach to management. Because of the variety of anatomic abnormalities associated with thumb hypoplasia, clinical and intraoperative evaluation of the thumb must be ...

An amputated thumb causes an estimated loss of 50% of the entire hand's function. A hand without a thumb is, at best, a useful hook. A partial amputation distal to the metacarpophalangeal joint usually requires nothing more than a well-padded stump which is not adherent to bone and a stump which is free from neuroma (Fig. 1).

1. Absence of a thumb, whether congenital or due to injury, is a severe disability. Reconstructive surgery has much to offer. 2. Pollicisation is the most satisfactory method, being the only means of providing a thumb with normal tactile sensibility.

Gamekeeper's thumb is due to complete rupture of the ulnar collateral ligament; it should be clinically differentiated from incomplete rupture. Methods of diagnosis and treatment of gamekeeper's thumb are described. The results in 10 cases of gamekeeper's thumb treated by surgery, with more than a one-year follow-up are evaluated.

Abstract Total loss of the thumb, an uncommon and crippling injury, demands reconstruction of a substitute that will be possessed of a fair degree of functional skill and sensation and which will be cosmetically acceptable. Choice of a method of reconstruction depends largely on the presence or absence of a useful and functional thumb stump remnant ...
