Visible electrical discharges inside thunderclouds

Geofisica pura e applicata, 1956
Lightning discharge streamers are occasionally visible inside and above the base of isolated convection thunderclouds. Two photographs of such a transparent cloud are discussed. They show that the negatively charged region reaches to an altitude of 8 km and has a horizontal width of about 8 km.

The electric field of overhead thunderclouds

Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, 1930
In a previous paper* I drew attention to the fact that, owing to the peculiar geographical position of Bombay, almost all the “ heat ” thunderstorms which form during the pre-monsoon and the post-monsoon periods over the hills to the east of the Colaba Observatory, between the sea coast and the Western Ghats, develop a westerly movement and pass over ...

THE ELECTRICAL AND METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS INSIDE THUNDERCLOUDS

Journal of Meteorology, 1950
Abstract An investigation of 125 storms (67 thunderstorms and 58 shower clouds with high electric fields) completed during 1945–1948 at the Zugspitze Observatory in Germany (10,000 ft) is presented. The results are discussed with regard to electrical conditions, precipitation, and some other meteorological details.
