Mesoscale cyclonic storms associated with tornadoes and localised wind damage in frontal rainbands

open access: yesWeather, Volume 79, Issue 4, Page 108-123, April 2024.
Ten cases are identified of an unusual type of mesoscale windstorm in the United Kingdom between 2006 and 2021. The windstorms, which occurred in association with frontal rainbands, produced wind damage swaths no more than 20–30km wide, but sometimes extending for several hundred kilometres, often with embedded tornadoes.

Characteristics of colliding density currents: a numerical and theoretical study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
This paper presents a new set of numerical simulations of two colliding density currents in a idealized framework, integrating the Boussinesq vorticity equation in a rectangular bounded domain.

Analysis on a Squall Line and its Downburst over the Lower Reaches of Jinsha River

open access: yesGaoyuan qixiang
Squall lines often produce extremely disastrous gales and play a crucial role in the safety of hytropower stations. This article explores a squall line event over the lower reaches of Jinsha River on June 4, 2016, which brought 13-level wind at the canyon

Investigations of simulated aircraft flight through thunderstorm outflows [PDF]

open access: yes
The effects of wind shear on aircraft flying through thunderstorm gust fronts were investigated. A computer program was developed to solve the two dimensional, nonlinear equations of aircraft motion, including wind shear.

On the identification of weather avoidance routes in the terminal maneuvering area of Hong Kong International Airport [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The safety and efficiency of air traffic are significantly affected by adverse weather. This holds especially in terminal maneuvering areas (TMA) where, in addition to the impact of weather itself, potential weather avoidance routes are strongly ...

Natural hazards in Australia : storms, wind and hail [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Current and potential future storm-related wind and hail hazard in Australia is reviewed. Confidence in the current incidence of wind hazard depends upon the type of storm producing the hazard.
