Accelerated Organic Carbon Burial Rates Reconstructed in Elephant Butte Reservoir, New Mexico During a Megadrought

open access: yesWater Resources Research, Volume 61, Issue 3, March 2025.
Abstract Artificial lakes (reservoirs) accumulate sediment and organic carbon (OC) over time. We investigated sedimentation processes in a dryland reservoir and informed OC burial and potential preservation. Our study site, Elephant Butte Reservoir on the Rio Grande, New Mexico, USA receives inflows from sediment‐laden, monsoon‐driven flash floods ...

Inverse Energy Cascades in the Boundary Layer During Strong Winds Based on Doppler Lidar

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 52, Issue 2, 28 January 2025.
Abstract Inverse energy cascade (IEC), where energy moves from small to large eddies, has been debated, with limited observational evidence. This study used 19 months of Doppler Lidar data from Qingdao, China, to examine IEC associated with gusts. We found IECs occurred 15% of the time at 50 m height.

An Operational and Real‐Time Severe Weather Nowcasting System Based on Lightning Jumps: Introduction and Evaluation

open access: yesAdvances in Meteorology, Volume 2025, Issue 1, 2025.
In this study, the effectiveness of integrating the lightning jump (LJ) detection method with radar‐based storm tracking and extrapolation techniques for operational nowcasting of severe convective weather events in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region is investigated.

Thunderstorm-triggered asthma: what we know so far

open access: yesJournal of Asthma and Allergy, 2019
Thunderstorm-triggered asthma (TA) is the occurrence of acute asthma attacks immediately following a thunderstorm. Epidemics have occurred across the world during pollen season and have the capacity to rapidly inundate a health care service, resulting in

Study on the Mesoscale Characteristics and Formation Causes of a Graupel Process at Mianyang Airport in Winter

open access: yesAdvances in Meteorology, Volume 2025, Issue 1, 2025.
A rare short‐term winter graupel event occurred at Mianyang Airport in the Sichuan Basin on January 10, 2025, with graupel particles less than 5 mm in diameter and lasting approximately 3 min. Based on surface observations, dual‐polarization radar data, and reanalysis data, this study reveals the triggering mechanism, microphysical characteristics, and

Extreme weather caused by concurrent cyclone, front and thunderstorm occurrences

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2017
Phenomena such as cyclones, fronts and thunderstorms can cause extreme weather in various regions throughout the world. Although these phenomena have been examined in numerous studies, they have not all been systematically examined in combination with ...
