Observations of microphysical evolution in a High Plains thunderstorm anvil

Atmospheric Research, 1994
Abstract An instrumented aircraft performed several penetrations of the upper regions of a U.S. High Plains thunderstorm anvil. The concentrations of particles larger than about 50 μm were up to 10 6 m −3 , which is much higher than has been found in some other studies of the anvil regions of thunderstorms.

The High Speed Updraft—The Key to the Severe Thunderstorm

Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 1968
Abstract A model of the motion within a severe storm with some rainfall kinematics is developed from simple hydrodynamic concepts of flow. Based on measured data and descriptive analyses of storms with sufficient data to permit the assumption of a steady state, this paper supports the statement that the large, strong and erect updraft is the single ...

High energetic radiation from thunderstorms and lightning

2012
Electrical discharges in gases can be roughly divided into two categories: those whose behavior is governed by low-energy electrons, with energies less than a few tens of eV, and those whose behavior is governed by high-energy electrons, with energies often reaching several tens of MeV.

Lidar Observations of High Plains Thunderstorm Precipitation

Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 1977
Abstract The results of a field program using a polarization diversity lidar system to study high plains thunderstorm precipitation are given. The presence of “reflectivity” bright bands of the general form predicted by a numerical simulation indicates that ice prune precipitation processes were predominantly acting in the storm studied. Depolarization

The Velocities of Charged Hydrometeors and the Production of High Fields in Thunderstorms

1976
Calculations of the terminal velocities of charged hydrometeors in the presence of electric fields have been confirmed experimentally. They have formed the basis of computations of the charging current J flowing through a thundercloud as a result of the operation of a precipitative mechanism of cloud electrification.

Ensemble predictability of an isolated mountain thunderstorm in a high‐resolution model

Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, 2011
AbstractConvective‐scale ensemble simulations with perturbed initial conditions are performed to investigate the physical mechanisms, sensitivities and predictability of convective precipitation for a well‐observed event from the Convective and Orographically induced Precipitation Study (COPS).

On the influence of intense thunderstorm activity on high-precision gravimetric observations

Seismic Instruments, 2015
The influence of thunderstorm activity on gravimetric observations has not been considered previously. Based on long-term high-precision gravimetric observations, we have found that thunderstorm activity induces a systematic error in the measured value of gravity acceleration.

Infrasound characteristics of nontornadic and tornadic thunderstorms using high-resolution simulations

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2020
There has been increased interest in improving severe weather detection by supplementing NOAA's WSR-88D radar network with an infrasound observation network, which may be able to detect distinct sub-audible signatures from tornadic thunderstorms. While there is evidence that tornadic thunderstorms exhibit observable infrasound signals, what is not well-

Severe thunderstorms in the Colombia and Venezuela high lightning active areas

2017 International Symposium on Lightning Protection (XIV SIPDA), 2017
This paper presents a general description of severe thunderstorm episodes detected during the last two years (2015–2016) in the most active lightning regions in Colombia and Venezuela. Hourly and seasonal occurrence characteristics, strokes rates, duration and orographic patterns are described.

High radar echoes from Alberta thunderstorms.

1964
The utilization of radar as a method of observing clouds and cloud patterns has been most beneficial in the quest for an understanding of cloud physical processes, because radar is capable of "seeing" into the central parts of precipitating clouds, and can reveal the distribution and development of the precipitation patterns within them.
