The Trends of Warm‐Season Thunderstorm and Lightning Days in China and the Influence of Environmental Factors

Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, 2021
Previous studies indicated that numbers of meso‐micro scale severe convective weather exhibited a significant decrease over China's mainland in the past decades. However, the possible mechanism of the decrease has not been well understood.

Entropy-Based Thunderstorm Imaging System With Real-Time Prediction and Early Warning

IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement
A combination of the sample entropy and the artificial intelligence (AI) would hopefully bring progress to the smart thunderstorm detection. In this article, we establish an entropy-based thunderstorm point charge imaging system with data clustering, in ...

Lidar Observations of High Plains Thunderstorm Precipitation

Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 1977
Abstract The results of a field program using a polarization diversity lidar system to study high plains thunderstorm precipitation are given. The presence of “reflectivity” bright bands of the general form predicted by a numerical simulation indicates that ice prune precipitation processes were predominantly acting in the storm studied. Depolarization

Observations of microphysical evolution in a High Plains thunderstorm anvil

Atmospheric Research, 1994
Abstract An instrumented aircraft performed several penetrations of the upper regions of a U.S. High Plains thunderstorm anvil. The concentrations of particles larger than about 50 μm were up to 10 6 m −3 , which is much higher than has been found in some other studies of the anvil regions of thunderstorms.

Infrasound characteristics of nontornadic and tornadic thunderstorms using high-resolution simulations

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2020
There has been increased interest in improving severe weather detection by supplementing NOAA's WSR-88D radar network with an infrasound observation network, which may be able to detect distinct sub-audible signatures from tornadic thunderstorms. While there is evidence that tornadic thunderstorms exhibit observable infrasound signals, what is not well-

Discussion of Measurements inside High-Speed Thunderstorm Updrafts

Journal of Applied Meteorology, 1974
Abstract Four soundings taken in high-speed updrafts of severe thunderstorms indicate moist adiabatic ascent to mid-levels. This implies that the cores of strong updrafts are undiluted by environmental air. The Squires-Turner entraining jet model substantiates this conclusion.

Observations of high-energy radiation during thunderstorms at Tien-Shan

Physical Review D, 2016
Energetic radiation during thunderstorms is studied. The possibility to identify the high-energy lightning emission in the 10 s monitoring mode is demonstrated. Simultaneous measurements of gamma-ray emission, high-energy electrons, and neutron radiation in the triggering mode are fulfilled.

Understanding the Radio Spectrum of Thunderstorm Narrow Bipolar Events

Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, 2019
This paper reports a study to understand the radio spectrum of thunderstorm narrow bipolar events (NBEs) or compact intracloud discharges, which are powerful sources of high‐frequency (HF) and very high frequency (VHF) electromagnetic radiation.

Synoptic-Scale Environments Associated with High Plains Severe Thunderstorms

Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society, 1980
Abstract Typical synoptic-scale features are described for summertime severe thunderstorms on the High Plains. Severe weather generally occurs on several days in succession, under conditions that are relatively benign in terms of conventional severe weather parameters.

Predicting Thunderstorm-Induced Power Outages to Support Utility Restoration

IEEE Transactions on Power Systems, 2019
Strong thunderstorms have substantial impacts on power systems, posing risks and inconveniences due to power outages. Developing models predicting the outages before a storm is a high priority to support restoration planning.
