Rift‐Related Sedimentary Basin and Deeper‐Seated Mafic Intrusions Modeled Beneath Thwaites Glacier, West Antarctica: Influence on Glacier Dynamics [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth
Thwaites Glacier in West Antarctica has been identified as a route to destabilization of the whole West Antarctic Ice Sheet, potentially leading to several meters of sea‐level rise. However, future evolution of Thwaites Glacier remains uncertain due to

Large-Scale Atmospheric Drivers of Snowfall on Thwaites Glacier

2020

High snowfall events on Thwaites Glacier are a key influencer of its ice mass change. In this study, we diagnose the mechanisms for orographic precipitation on Thwaites Glacier by analyzing the atmospheric conditions that lead to high snowfall events.

Turbulence Observations in the Grounding Zone Region of Thwaites Glacier

2020

Antarctic ice shelves restrain the flow of grounded ice into the ocean, and are thus an important control on Antarctica’s contribution to global sea level rise. West Antarctica represents the largest source of uncertainty in future sea level projections, and Thwaites Glacier has the potential to influence sea ...

Safety Bands of Thwaites Glacier

Mass loss from the Antarctic Ice Sheet is the main source of uncertainty in projections of future sea-level rise. These uncertainties essentially stem from the fact that some regions, such as Thwaites Glacier, may reach a tipping point, defined as irreversible mass loss on human time scales, with a warming climate.

Linking postglacial landscapes to glacier dynamics using swath radar at Thwaites Glacier, Antarctica

Geology, 2020
AbstractIce sheets reshape Earth’s surface. Maps of the landscape formed by past ice sheets are our best tool for reconstructing historic ice sheet behavior. But models of glacier erosion and deposition that explain mapped features are relatively untested, and without observations of landforms developing in situ, postglacial landscapes can provide only

Future irreversible loss of Thwaites Glacier relative to global warming

2023
The speed of West Antarctic melting is a very important factor in determining the degree of future global sea level rise. Loss of the Thwaites glacier due to global warming will have various regime changes in line with changes in the Earth system.

Simulating 3D calving dynamics at Thwaites Glacier

Recent advances in the Elmer/Ice modelling suite have allowed 3D simulation of unrestricted calving geometries at tidewater glaciers such as Jakobshavn Isbrae. We present the first use of this model in an Antarctic setting. The more stochastic nature of calving at Antarctic ice sheets when compared to a Greenlandic setting has discouraged the ...

How sensitive is Thwaites glacier to ocean conditions?

In its present geometric configuration, the Thwaites Ice Shelf exerts only a limited influence on the upstream dynamics of Thwaites Glacier. Previous studies have demonstrated that ice flux across the grounding line is largely insensitive to the presence or absence of the ice shelf.
