Although thyroid carcinoma is relatively uncommon, approximately 33,550 new cases will be diagnosed in the United States in 2007. It occurs 2 to 3 times more often in women than in men, and with the incidence increasing by 4% per year, it is currently the eighth most common malignancy diagnosed in women.

Medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) accounts for 5-8% of all thyroid cancers. MTC is mainly sporadic in nature, but an hereditary pattern [multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 (MEN 2)] is present in 20-30% of cases, transmitted as an autosomal-dominant trait due to germline mutations of the RET proto-oncogene.

Thyroid carcinomas are fairly uncommon and include disease types that range from indolent localised papillary carcinomas to the fulminant and lethal anaplastic disease. Several attempts to formulate a consensus about treatment of thyroid carcinoma have resulted in published guidelines for diagnosis and initial disease management.
