A 48-year-old woman is seen for evaluation of a slowly enlarging lower neck mass. Three months previously, she had symptoms consistent with an upper respiratory tract infection that resolved within 3 to 4 days, then noticed a lump in her lower neck just to the left of midline.

Twenty-nine (50%) of 58 children with thyroid carcinoma received previous ionizing radiation to the head and neck. The average interval to diagnosis was 9.6 years. Fifty-six carcinomas were either papillary, follicular, or mixed differentiated tumors. Two carcinomas were medullary with amyloid struma. There were no undifferentiated carcinomas. Cervical

AbstractMedullary thyroid carcinoma is an infrequent and unusual malignancy. Since its description 15 years ago, many new features have developed. Many biologically active compounds which are directly related to the different symptoms of the disease have been recovered from the tumors.

Forty-three patients who died of thyroid carcinoma (29 well-differentiated and 14 poorly differentiated tumors) were evaluated to define the parameters that affect the lethal nature of this tumor. Differentiated, limited extent of tumor and a young age at diagnosis correlated favorably with length of survival.

Abstract In the differential diagnosis of indolent, usually unilateral, cervical lymph nodes in childhood, the possibility of a thyroid carcinoma with regional metastases has to be considered. Rapidly growing solitary, or sometimes multiple, nodules of the thyroid gland require special attention.

Malignant thyroid carcinomas are relatively common in dogs. The majority of tumors are unilateral and nonfunctional. Before deciding on treatment options, it is important to determine whether the tumor is freely moveable or fixed and invasive into adjacent tissues. Thyroidectomy is recommended for unilateral, mobile thyroid carcinomas.

Follicular carcinomas are rare thyroid malignancies that are difficult to diagnose preoperatively. Fine needle aspiration is an excellent diagnostic tool and should be the initial step in managing the solitary thyroid nodule. Follicular carcinoma cannot be diagnosed with certainty by cytologic features alone; the diagnosis rests on the histologic ...

Multiple prognostic factors for outcome in papillary thyroid carcinoma are identified. For a cohort of 1500 consecutive patients followed an average of 16 years, survival rates for tumor recurrence and cause-specific mortality are described. Risk groups derived from novel prognostic scoring or staging systems and the role of DNA ploidy testing are ...
