Thyroid crisis presenting as coma

Coma is a rare complication of thyrotoxicosis. A patient with coma due to a thyroid crisis is reported. The EEG showed extremely slow and low voltage activity, which gradually returned to normal. Coma as a presenting symptom of thyroid crisis has not been reported before.

Thyrotoxic Crisis/Thyroid Storm

Thyrotoxic crisis is an uncommon, life-threatening condition with aggravated toxic symptoms. It occurs most frequently in inadequately or untreated patients with Graves’ disease, but has also been described in multinodular toxic goitre. Toxic crisis generally develops relatively rapidly and can occur in all ages and in both men and women.
