Testing Thyroid Function

1986
The commonly used thyroid function tests can be divided into three categories: blood tests that assess the functional status of the thyroid gland (T4, T3R, T3RIA, TSH), tests that dynamically evaluate the pituitary—thyroid axis (TRH test, cytomal suppression test), and in vivo isotopic tests (radioiodine uptake tests, thyroid scan, etc.).

THYROID, TESTS OF FUNCTION OF

1979
Publisher Summary This chapter presents the tests and functions of thyroid. Nearly all the circulating, organically bound iodine is normally incorporated in thyroxine (T 4 ). More than 99% of this T 4 is bound to a specific thyroxine-binding globulin (TBG); this bound T 4 is physiologically inactive.

Thyroid Function Tests in Thyroid and Nonthyroid Disease

CRC Critical Reviews in Clinical Laboratory Sciences, 1983
Modern day evaluation of thyroid disorders requires a combination of accurate clinical judgement and reliable, sensitive, and specific thyroid functions tests. Principle among the latter are thyroxine (T4) 3, 5, 3'-triiodothyronine (T3), and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH).

Thyroid function tests and their interpretation

The Indian Journal of Pediatrics, 1997
For general screening of children who are in fairly good health and in whom CNS or pituitary disease is not strongly suspected, the newer THS assays are very useful in assessing the action of both endogenous and exogenous thyroid hormone. Those children in whom primary hypothyroidism is strongly suspected or who are already on thyroid hormone ...

Tests of thyroid function

1992
Thyroid disorders are common. At least 5% of the adult population in Western countries have hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, goitre or a nodule in the thyroid. Most of those with a goitre or nodule are euthyroid, but laboratory confirmation of this is required.

Interpretation of thyroid function tests

Disease-a-Month, 1989
The development of radioimmunoassays over the past 20 years has expanded our knowledge of thyroid physiology and improved our management of thyroid disease. The use of these tools in neonatal screening for congenital hypothyroidism alone has reduced the incidence of mental retardation in the industrialized world.

Interpretation of thyroid function tests

The Lancet, 2001
The introduction of sensitive thyrotropin assays and free thyroid hormone measurements has simplified the interpretation of thyroid function tests. However, important pitfalls and difficult cases still exist. In this review, thyroid function test results are grouped into six different patterns.
