Complications of thyroid surgery
Annals of Surgical Oncology, 1995The morbidity of thyroid surgery is low. Despite this, some authors advocate a subtotal thyroidectomy instead of a total thyroidectomy, to avoid the higher morbidity associated with a total thyroidectomy. We retrospectively evaluated the complications of thyroid surgery in Leiden between January 1, 1982 and October 1, 1990.

Neuromonitoring in thyroid surgery
Current Opinion in Otolaryngology & Head & Neck Surgery, 2012Laryngeal nerve injuries are among the most important complications of thyroidectomy. Recently, the use of neuromonitoring has been increasingly employed in order to predict and document nerve function at the end of thyroidectomy. There is much controversy in recent studies concerning neuromonitoring in thyroid surgery.

Morbidity is today's concern in thyroid surgery. The purpose of this paper was to quantify risk factors' contribution to morbidity rates.During 50 months, 1,163 patients undergoing 1,192 thyroidectomies at one hospital were reviewed at follow-up of 8 to 58 months. There was 1 death (0.08%).

AbstractOccult and microscopic differentiated carcinoma of the thyroid is a clinically benign lesion, even when accompanied by lymph node metastases, and should be treated surgically by conservative procedures. Clinically detectable thyroid carcinomas may be of low‐risk types in younger patients or high‐risk types in older patients.

The sophistication of current surgical treatment of thyroid disorders reflects a better understanding of the pathophysiology. The development of more methods of therapy with antithyroid drugs, beta-adrenergic blocking agents, thyroid hormones, and radioactive isotopes as well as external irradiation has had an important effect on the role that surgery ...
