A comparison of ten digestive enzymes reveals a lack of chitinase in a phasmid and the loss of two β‐glucanases in a mantid

open access: yesPhysiological Entomology, Volume 45, Issue 1, Page 89-94, March 2020., 2020
The low nutrient value of plant foods favours reduced total enzyme activity in the midgut of phasmids. The ratio of bound to unbound enzymes is not correlated with the diet of the phasmid or mantid. The phasmid Peruphasma schultei is an obligatory leaf eater and secretes cell wall digesting enzymes in the midgut.

Diet variability among insular populations of Podarcis lizards reveals diverse strategies to face resource‐limited environments

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 9, Issue 22, Page 12408-12420, November 2019., 2019
Our manuscript investigates the dietary adaptations in ecologically contrasted insular populations of Podarcis lizards. We quantitatively tested whether the resource use in these animals was impacted by the ecological conditions encountered by lizards in island communities, specifically low food abundance and high population density.

The Early Instars of the Firebrat Thermobia domestica (Packard), (Thysanura) [PDF]

open access: yes, 1933
The firebrat, one of the minor household pests of Iowa, is an insect of more than usual scientific interest. Besides being remarkably thermophilic it represents the primitive order of the Apterygota, the Thysanura, the biology of which should have ...

Restoration tools and strategies for afforested Mediterranean coastal grasslands: is eucalypt removal alone enough to kickstart ecosystem recovery?

open access: yesRestoration Ecology, Volume 34, Issue 4, May 2026.
Abstract Introduction Afforestation with non‐native trees has profoundly altered coastal dune grasslands worldwide, creating persistent ecological legacies that constrain ecosystem recovery. Objectives We evaluated the cost‐effectiveness of two restoration approaches, distinguished by their respective demands for resource investment: Moderately ...

Chemical Integration of Myrmecophilous Guests in Aphaenogaster Ant Nests

open access: yesPsyche: A Journal of Entomology, Volume 2012, Issue 1, 2012., 2012
Social insect nests provide a safe and favourable shelter to many guests and parasites. In Aphaenogaster senilis nests many guests are tolerated. Among them we studied the chemical integration of two myrmecophile beetles, Sternocoelis hispanus (Coleoptera: Histeridae) and Chitosa nigrita (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae), and a silverfish.
