Laser surface modification of biomedical alloys [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
This study investigated the effects of high speed laser surface modification on 316L stainless steel and Ti-6Al-4V for biomedical implants application. Laser processing was carried out in an inert argon environment using a 1.5 kW CO2 laser.

Micro‐Mechanism Informed Neural Networks for Process‐Property Prediction in Laser Powder Bed Fusion

open access: yesArtificial Intelligence for Engineering, EarlyView.
Hard physics embedding, where neural networks learn residuals relative to analytical baselines, substantially outperforms soft loss‐function constraints for extrapolation in LPBF process–property prediction. Physics integration architecture determines generalization capability more than constraint quantity.

High/low temperature setups for submillimetric samples under various extreme conditions at the AILES beamline

open access: yesJournal of Synchrotron Radiation, EarlyView.
Two complementary high‐ and low‐temperature experimental setups have been developed at the AILES beamline of Synchrotron SOLEIL to enable infrared and terahertz spectroscopy of submillimetric samples under extreme and well controlled pressure and temperature conditions (from 10 K to 600 K and from vacuum up to 100 GPa).

The effects of anodization and instrumentation on titanium abutment surface characteristics and biofilm formation

open access: yesJournal of Prosthodontics, EarlyView.
Abstract Purpose To assess the impact of anodization and instrumentation on titanium abutment surface characteristics (surface roughness and wettability) and biofilm formation (viability and mass). Materials and Methods Titanium discs were obtained from pre‐milled abutment blanks made of titanium‐6aluminum‐7niobium alloy.

Effects of dextrose and lipopolysaccharide on the corrosion behavior of a Ti-6Al-4V alloy with a smooth surface or treated with double-acid-etching. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
Diabetes and infections are associated with a high risk of implant failure. However, the effects of such conditions on the electrochemical stability of titanium materials remain unclear.

A Novel 3D‐Printed Strut‐Type Prosthesis Reconstructs the Hemicortical Defect After Distal Femur Parosteal Osteosarcoma Resection: The Mid‐Term Follow‐Up Outcome

open access: yesOrthopaedic Surgery, EarlyView.
This study developed a novel three‐dimensional (3D)‐printed strut‐type prosthesis for reconstruction of bone defects following hemicortical resection of distal femoral parosteal osteosarcoma. The mid‐term follow‐up results demonstrated that this prosthesis effectively restored limb function and exhibited favorable bone ingrowth and osseointegration ...

Effect of Oxygen Content on Surface and Subsurface Integrity During Turning of Ti–6Al–4V

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, Volume 28, Issue 12, 17 June 2026.
This study examines how oxygen content in the ambient atmosphere affects the surface and subsurface properties of Ti–6Al–4V during turning. Results show that oxygen does not influence surface roughness. However, machining in an extremely high vacuum‐adequate atmosphere increases surface hardness by up to 7.8% and induces compressive residual stresses ...

Influence of an Oxygen‐Free Atmosphere on Diamond‐Single‐Grain Scratching of Ti–6Al–4V

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, Volume 28, Issue 12, 17 June 2026.
Single‐grain scratching of Ti–6Al–4V is investigated under controlled, oxygen‐free, and ambient atmospheres using a novel experimental setup with in situ high‐speed imaging. The approach enables direct observation of chip formation and adhesion under suppressed oxidation.
