Fractures of the tibia are generally considered major injuries because delayed and nonunions are frequent, angulatory deformities are common, the rate of infection is greater than in most other bones and the period of incapacitation and reha-bilitation is lengthy.

ESF is an ideal fixation for most tibial fractures. Many ESF configurations have been used in repair of tibial fractures including ESF supplementation of intramedullary pin or interfragmentary screw fixation. Tibial fractures are often comminuted or open, and the tibia is prone to postoperative infections after open reduction and internal fixation. ESF

We studied the applicability of Langenskiöld's classification to a predominantly nonwhite population with infantile tibia vara. Age at presentation was younger than that in previously published studies. Forty-seven tibiae averaging 6 years 7 months of follow-up had 66% good results. Poor results increased in proportion to stage at presentation.

The ankle and distal tibia can often be damaged through inversion injuries, or from twisting trauma at the foot. Fractures to the tibial plateau will reduce the functioning of the limb and articulation of the knee. It is often the lateral side of the plateau that is damaged, the fixation of which will be covered in this chapter, reviewing a selection ...
