Segmental Tibial Shaft Fractures

A series of 54 cases with multiple fractures of the tibia is reported. Sixty-eight per cent of the group were pedestrians hit by a car. Fifty-two per cent were open fractures. Osteosynthesis was performed in 33 cases, whereas 21 were treated conservatively.

Isolated Tibial Shaft Fracture

A nineteen-year-old otherwise healthy woman is seen in the emergency room after being struck by a car. The patient reports left lower extremity pain and has no other injuries. Exam shows a Tscherne grade I soft tissue injury with otherwise normal motor and sensory exam. There are no signs of compartment syndrome. A closed reduction was performed.

Longitudinal tibial stress fractures

SUMMARYThe tibia is a fairly common site for stress fractures of both the fatigue and insufficiency types. The majority are transverse or, less frequently, oblique. The present report outlines four cases of vertical stress fractures, an orientation that is very uncommon and leads to bone scan findings which can be misleading.
