The taxon Cicada tibicen Linnaeus, 1758 was described based on a specimen currently in the Linnean collection at Uppsala University that was designated as the lectotype for the taxon (Sanborn 2008).

Tibicen figuratus (Walker) (Figs. 15, 52–60) Fidicina figurata Walker 1858: 19. Type locality: unknown. The collection locality for the holotype female was unknown to Walker. Holotype is in the Natural History Museum, London. Adults first emerge in late-July and can be heard singing until mid-October.

Tibicen Latreille, 1825: 426. Type species: Tibicen plebejus (Scopoli). There are 29 species and eight subspecies of Tibicen in North America north of Mexico (Sanborn and Heath in preparation). Boulard (1984; 1988; 1997; 2001; 2003) has argued for the suppression of Tibicen and its derivatives in favor of Lyristes Horvath.
