Potential Invasive Indo‐Pacific Acropora in a Coral Reef of Venezuela: A Contribution to Their Morphological and Molecular Knowledge [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
We report the first record of a non‐native hermatypic coral in Venezuela, exhibiting biological traits characteristic of invasive species. The coral is a member of the genus Acropora (Scleractinia: Acroporidae), native to the Indo‐Pacific. This non‐native petrous coral occurred in a reef of the Morrocoy National Park, in the southern Caribbean.

New Records of Michigan Cicadidae (Homoptera), With Notes on the Use of Songs to Monitor Range Changes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
We present records of Diceroprocta vitripennis, Tibicen chloromera, and Tibicen pruinosa (new state record) in Michigan. Monitoring geographic range changes and population size differences by song suggests several population situations for cicadas: (1 ...

Does trappability and self-selection influence cognitive performance?

open access: yesRoyal Society Open Science, 2022
Recent research has highlighted how trappability and self-selection—the processes by which individuals with particular traits may be more likely to be caught or to participate in experiments—may be sources of bias in studies of animal behaviour and ...

Description of three new genera, Paratibicen, Gigatibicen, and Ameritibicen, of Cryptotympanini (Hemiptera: Cicadidae) and a key to their species

open access: yesJournal of Asia-Pacific Biodiversity, 2016
Three new genera, Paratibicen gen. nov., Gigatibicen gen. nov., and Ameritibicen gen. nov., are erected for the former members of Neotibicen Hill & Moulds, 2015 from North America, designating Cicada similaris Smith & Grossbeck, 1907, Cicada auletes ...

Unscrambling variation in avian eggshell colour and patterning in a continent-wide study [PDF]

open access: yesRoyal Society Open Science, 2019
The evolutionary drivers underlying marked variation in the pigmentation of eggs within many avian species remains unclear. The leading hypotheses proposed to explain such variation advocate the roles of genetic differences, signalling and/or structural ...

Cicada (Tibicen linnei) steers by force vectoring

open access: yesTheoretical and Applied Mechanics Letters, 2016
To change flight direction, flying animals modulate aerodynamic force either relative to their bodies to generate torque about the center of mass, or relative to the flight path to produce centripetal force that curves the trajectory.

Insects Taken at Japanese Beetle Traps Baited with Anethole-Eugenol in Southern Michigan in 1968 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
A survey of the populations of Jap.anese beetles, Popillia japonica Newman, is made each year in southern Michigan to determine the abundance and distribution of this pest insect. Since little information is available about the insects that are attracted

Color patterns of the hermit crab Calcinus tibicen (Herbst, 1791) fail to indicate high genetic variation within COI gene

open access: yesNauplius, 2018
Apart from traditional characters, other data have been used for taxonomy, like color patterns. Based on the different colors (green and orange) observed for some Calcinus tibicen (Herbst, 1761) specimens, we evaluated the genetic distance for cytochrome
