[Tick-borne diseases].

Due to their worldwide distribution, from hottest to coldest climates, and due to their behaviour, ticks are capable of transmitting numerous human and animal bacterial viral or parasitous diseases. Depending on the disease, they play the role of biological vector or intermediate host. In France, six tick borne diseases are of epidemiologic importance.

The role of ticks in veterinary medicine and the use of DDT in their control is discussed fully in Chapter VIII (Knipling).
