An energy and carbon life cycle assessment of tidal power case study: The proposed Cardiff–Weston severn barrage scheme [PDF]

open access: yesEnergy, 2012
Under the Kyoto Protocol many countries have targets to reduce carbon emissions and increase renewable energy production. In order to do this effectively the impact and efficacy of differing schemes must be determined.

A scenario-based approach to evaluating potential environmental impacts following a tidal barrage installation [PDF]

open access: yesOcean and Coastal Management, 2015
Total exclusion barrages have a high impact on estuarine systems as they are permanent barriers to tidal flow. The environmental impacts of five putative barrages in various locations within the Tamar River estuary in northern Tasmania, Australia were ...

Tidal Barrages and Birds

Ibis, 2006
This paper reviews the main effects that building tidal power barrages would have on the bird populations using Britain's estuaries. The changes in the tidal prism that would occur after a tidal power barrage is built are discussed in the context of their effect on the ecology of the estuary.

Estimation of annual energy output from a tidal barrage using two different methods [PDF]

open access: yesApplied Energy, 2012
In recent years, there have been growing international challenges relating to climate change and global warming, with a conflict developing between the need to create a low-carbon economy and rapid depleting reserves of fossil fuels. In addition to these

Environmental Impact Assessment of the Strangford Lough Tidal Power Barrage Scheme in Northern Ireland [PDF]

open access: yesWater Science and Technology, 1984
A tidal power barrage on Strangford Lough, would supply about 10% of Northern Ireland's energy requirements in the year 2000. However, the Droject will have serious environmental consequences for the largely unpolluted estuary which contains rare floral ...

Tidal power and the Severn Barrage

Journal of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, 1949
After reviewing the principal projected tidal-power schemes in various parts of the world, the first part of the paper is devoted to consideration of the principles of single- and double-tide working and their application under the conditions prevailing in the Severn Estuary.A single-basin scheme was recommended for the Severn Barrage and, in common ...

The operation of a tidal power barrage

1991
A tidal barrage is designed to extract energy from the rise and fall of the tides and is relatively simple in concept. Thus a tidal barrage has only four main components: turbines, located in water passages which are designed to convert the potential energy of the difference in water levels across the barrage into kinetic energy in the form of fast ...

Design of tidal barrage power schemes

Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Maritime Engineering, 2009
A simplified approach to the design of impounded estuarine tidal power schemes is described, based on the mean tidal amplitude and the surface area of the enclosed basin. Power outputs of 0·27 and 0·37 of the available energy can be realised for one-way and two-way operations, respectively.

Potential Environmental Consequences of Tidal Power Development Seaward of Tidal Barrages

OCEANS 81, 1981
Recently, the world economic climate, mainly due to fossil fuel costs, has become increasingly favorable to tidal power development. Several potential tidal developments are presently being considered including two massive projects in the upper Bay of Fundy.
