A tidal bore is perhaps the most spectacular tidal phenomenon that can be readily observed. When a large tide enters a shallow, funnel-shaped estuary with a gently sloping bottom, its waveform is distorted and this can lead to an impressive rolling ‘wall of water’, travelling upriver.

Physically based simulation of tidal bore
2009 11th IEEE International Conference on Computer-Aided Design and Computer Graphics, 2009Tidal bore is a peculiar nature phenomenon which is caused by the lunar and solar gravitation. Based on the physical characters of tidal bores, in this paper we propose a novel method to model and render this phenomenon, especially the tidal waves in Qiantang estuary.

Formation and Propagation of Tidal Bore
Journal of Waterway, Port, Coastal, and Ocean Engineering, 1995In a tidal river, the peak value of the discharge occurs earlier than the peak value of the tidal elevation. The high water level of a tidal wave moves faster than the low water level, and as a result the slope of the wave-surface profile, in the direction of propagation, increases from high water to low and decreases from low water to high.

A tidal bore is a series of waves propagating upstream in the river mouth as the tide turns to rising. It forms during the spring tide conditions with a tidal range in excess of 4.5–6 m in a narrow funneled estuary with low freshwater levels. The presence of a tidal bore indicates some macrotidal conditions associated with an asymmetrical tide. Two key

Internal tidal bores and bottom nepheloid layers
Continental Shelf Research, 2001Abstract During a littoral optical environment project field study in shallow water off Oceanside, California, large spikes in optical attenuation (dominated by suspended particles) were observed in a near-bottom mooring. Using moored current meters together with aircraft remote imaging overflights and profiling anchor stations, we established that ...
