Monitoring Tidal Bores using Acoustic Tomography System

Journal of Coastal Research, 2017
ABSTRACT Kawanisi, K.; Zhu, X.-H.; Fan, X., and Nistor, I., 2017. Monitoring tidal bores using acoustic tomography system. Continuous measurements of flow velocities and suspended sediments were carried out in the Qiantang River (China) with extreme tidal bore conditions.

Numerical simulation of tidal bores and hydraulic jumps

Coastal Engineering, 2005
An implicit finite difference formulation of the nonlinear shallow water equations is developed to allow for the treatment of tidal bores and hydraulic jumps. Five different schemes are investigated involving upwind treatment of convective terms, central differences combined with dissipative interface, forward time-centering and various combinations of

2011
A tidal bore is a series of waves propagating upstream as the tidal flow turns to rising. It forms during spring tide conditions when the tidal range exceeds 4 to 6 m and the flood tide is confined to a narrow funnelled estuary. Its existence is based upon a fragile hydrodynamic balance between the tidal amplitude, the freshwater river flow conditions ...

Acoustic Wave Propagation through a Tidal Bore

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1973
Large thermal fluctuations associated with internal tidal waves can lead to highly asymmetric wave profiles having the characteristics of internal tidal bores. An acoustic wave propagated through a medium in which such a phenomenon is in progress can undergo amplitude variations exceeding 30 dB.

Perspective on the Tidal Bore: Background and Initiation

Volume 1: Symposia, Parts A and B, 2012
Tidal bores have been the subject or cause of legend, poetry, recreation, tourism, shipping disasters, and scientific interest for centuries. They pose interesting theoretical questions for the engineer. Introductory details are presented regarding the remarkable tidal bore phenomenon, including discussion of the tidal bore in various locations and a ...
