Physically based simulation of tidal bore
2009 11th IEEE International Conference on Computer-Aided Design and Computer Graphics, 2009Tidal bore is a peculiar nature phenomenon which is caused by the lunar and solar gravitation. Based on the physical characters of tidal bores, in this paper we propose a novel method to model and render this phenomenon, especially the tidal waves in Qiantang estuary.

Formation and Propagation of Tidal Bore
Journal of Waterway, Port, Coastal, and Ocean Engineering, 1995In a tidal river, the peak value of the discharge occurs earlier than the peak value of the tidal elevation. The high water level of a tidal wave moves faster than the low water level, and as a result the slope of the wave-surface profile, in the direction of propagation, increases from high water to low and decreases from low water to high.

A tidal bore is perhaps the most spectacular tidal phenomenon that can be readily observed. When a large tide enters a shallow, funnel-shaped estuary with a gently sloping bottom, its waveform is distorted and this can lead to an impressive rolling ‘wall of water’, travelling upriver.

A tidal bore is a series of waves propagating upstream in the river mouth as the tide turns to rising. It forms during the spring tide conditions with a tidal range in excess of 4.5–6 m in a narrow funneled estuary with low freshwater levels. The presence of a tidal bore indicates some macrotidal conditions associated with an asymmetrical tide. Two key

Physical Modeling of Unsteady Turbulence in Breaking Tidal Bores
Journal of Hydraulic Engineering, 2012A tidal bore is an unsteady flow motion generated by the rapid water level rise at the river mouth during the early flood tide under macrotidal and appropriate bathymetric conditions. This paper presents a study that physically investigates the turbulent properties of tidal bores. Results from some experimental measurements of free-surface fluctuations

Perspective on the Tidal Bore: Background and Initiation
Volume 1: Symposia, Parts A and B, 2012Tidal bores have been the subject or cause of legend, poetry, recreation, tourism, shipping disasters, and scientific interest for centuries. They pose interesting theoretical questions for the engineer. Introductory details are presented regarding the remarkable tidal bore phenomenon, including discussion of the tidal bore in various locations and a ...

Internal tidal bores and bottom nepheloid layers
Continental Shelf Research, 2001Abstract During a littoral optical environment project field study in shallow water off Oceanside, California, large spikes in optical attenuation (dominated by suspended particles) were observed in a near-bottom mooring. Using moored current meters together with aircraft remote imaging overflights and profiling anchor stations, we established that ...

Tidal Bores, Aegir, Eagre, Mascaret, Pororoca [PDF]
A tidal bore is a series of waves propagating upstream as the tidal flow turns to rising. It forms during spring tide conditions when the tidal range exceeds 4 to 6 m and the flood tide is confined to a narrow funnelled estuary. Its existence is based upon a fragile hydrodynamic balance between the tidal amplitude, the freshwater river flow conditions ...

Unsteady turbulence in tidal bores: Ensemble-average or VITA? [PDF]
A tidal bore is a series of waves propagating upstream as the tidal flow turns to rising in a macro-tidal estuary with a funnel shape. The tidal bore front is a hydrodynamic discontinuity. In this study, the characteristics of breaking tidal bores were investigated physically under controlled flow conditions.
