Detrital Zircon Data Support Stronger, Inland‐Tracking Hurricanes During the Miocene Climatic Optimum, Maryland USA

open access: yesPaleoceanography and Paleoclimatology, Volume 41, Issue 2, February 2026.
Abstract Climate models run under warmer‐than‐modern conditions indicate that hurricanes pass closer to the US East Coast and show that a higher proportion of tropical cyclones achieve “major hurricane” strength with winds >209 km/hr. Empirical observations indicate that the dominant southward longshore current direction off the US East Coast is ...

Unravelling echinoid mass mortalities: a global overview of mechanisms, spatio‐temporal trends, and taxonomic insights

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 101, Issue 1, Page 221-236, February 2026.
ABSTRACT Mass mortality events (MMEs) have been occurring since the dawn of time. However, in contrast to terrestrial events, most marine MMEs remain undetected, largely due to the inaccessibility of many marine environments. One of the most notorious and best‐studied marine MMEs in modern times is that of the population collapse of the echinoid ...

Biogeographic Patterns and Drivers of Endolithic Symbiosis in Mussels Across Atlantic Europe and North Africa

open access: yesJournal of Biogeography, Volume 53, Issue 2, February 2026.
ABSTRACT Aim Ecological interactions are central to ecosystem health. In intertidal habitats, mussels serve as foundational bioengineers. Microbial endoliths erode mussel shells and impair fitness but may also provide thermal benefits under stress. This relationship can be context‐dependent, shifting from parasitism to mutualism.
