Investigation of Low Order Parameters Affecting Tidal Stream Energy Resource Assessments

open access: yesProceedings of the European Wave and Tidal Energy Conference, 2023
Tidal stream energy may have the potential to contribute to the baseline energy needs of the UK. There is a significant difference between the existing assessments of the UK’s resource, highlighting the need for a standardised model.

Microphytobenthic extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in intertidal sediments fuel both generalist and specialist EPS-degrading bacteria [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Microphytobenthic biofilms contain high concentrations of carbohydrate-rich extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) that are important in sediment carbon cycling.

Global protected‐area coverage and human pressure on tidal flats

open access: yesConservation Biology, 2020
Tidal flats are a globally distributed coastal ecosystem important for supporting biodiversity and ecosystem services. Local to continental‐scale studies have documented rapid loss of tidal habitat driven by human impacts, but assessments of progress in ...

Endogenous Ceramide 24:1 Constrains Th17‐Driven Neutrophilic Inflammation by Antagonizing EP2 Signaling

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Cer24:1 levels are reduced in neutrophilic asthma and inversely correlate with disease severity and airway neutrophilia. Restoring Cer24:1 suppresses pathogenic Th17 differentiation by engaging EP2 on CD4+ T cells, thereby dampening the JAK2–STAT3–RORγt axis and reducing IL‐17 production.

The influence of rivers on seabird foraging ecology

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Rivers act as vital arteries to the world's oceans, delivering fresh water and nutrients that sustain marine ecosystems. Globally, river flow increasingly is being altered by climate change and anthropogenic pressures; yet the significance of rivers to predatory marine species, such as seabirds, and the extent to which river‐related changes ...

Gliese 581d is the first discovered terrestrial-mass exoplanet in the habitable zone [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
It has been suggested that the recently discovered exoplanet GJ581d might be able to support liquid water due to its relatively low mass and orbital distance.
