Role of plants in metal cycling in a tidal wetland: Implications for phytoremidiation

Science of The Total Environment, 2013
Accumulation of 8 metals and the semimetal As in 29 plant species was quantified in a restored tidal wetland on a contaminated site. Transfer coefficients between sediment and aboveground plant tissues were lower than in many other systems; from 0.013 (Pb) to 0.189 (Mn).

Fast tidal cycling and the origin of life

Icarus, 2004
Replicating prebiotic polymers are thought to predate the emergence of true life-forms. The initial mode of replication, a prerequisite for Darwinian selection, is unknown, but demands an explanation based on local physicochemistry. Dual consideration of the conditions of the early terrestrial surface, with the unusual physicochemical properties of ...

The effect of the tidal cycle on the phytoplankton community assemblage in a mangrove-dominated tropical tidal creek

Environmental Monitoring and Assessment
A comparative assessment of phytoplankton dynamics during low tide (LT) and high tide (HT) was conducted from February 2022 to January 2023 in a tropical mesotidal creek, Manori, Mumbai, India. In total, 124 phytoplankton species were recorded. The HT resulted in greater species richness (124 species) and diversity indices (Shannon-Wiener's index) than

Tidal cycles in the sediments of Santa Barbara Basin

Geology, 2004
The sediments of Santa Barbara Basin, a valuable source of information about the history of the California Current, show cyclic deposition in three properties here investigated: varve thickness, total organic carbon (TOC) accumulation, and fish-scale abundance. We analyzed the record since A.D. 1350 for varves, A.D. 1120 for TOC, and A.D. 1200 for fish

Asymmetric tidal straining across an inlet: Lateral inversion and variability over a tidal cycle

Estuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science, 2009
Abstract Tidal straining is a phenomenon of temporal variations in stratification and mixing resulting from the interaction of a longitudinal salinity gradient with the vertical shear of the horizontal tidal velocity. As a result, the theory predicts stronger and weaker stratification during ebb/low tide and flood/high tide, respectively. In contrast

The effect of a tidal cycle on the dynamics of nutrients in a tidal estuary in the Seto Inland Sea, Japan

Journal of Oceanography, 1998
A 24 hour time series survey was carried out during a spring tide (tidal range ca.2 m) of May 1995 on a tidal estuary in the Seto Inland Sea, Japan, in the context of an integrated program planned to quantify the dynamics of biophilic elements (carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus) and the roles played by the macrobenthos on the processes.

Circatidal Rhythms and Their Entrainment to the Tidal Cycle in Insects

2014
Some intertidal insects show endogenous activity rhythms that synchronize with the tidal cycle, that is, circatidal rhythms. In this chapter, we collected studies of the circatidal activity rhythms of intertidal insects and the entrainment of the circatidal rhythm to the tidal cycle.

Use of the Clock for Adjustment to Tidal and Lunar Cycles

1964
Numerous marine organisms show rhythms in their behaviour, coinciding with the cycles of high and low tide; but they also continue under laboratory conditions. Bohn (1903) found that green flatworms (Convoluta) come to the surface of the sand during high tide, and at low tide they bury themselves into the sand as it dries. This rhythm also continues in

How Does the Tidal Cycle Influence the Estuarine Dynamics of Microplastics?

Marine Pollution Bulletin
Estuaries are the main pathway for the microplastics (MPs) to enter into the oceans. However, factors that drive river-sea transport of MPs are not yet fully understood. Therefore, our research investigated the influence of the tidal cycle on the abundance and characteristics of MPs in an urban estuary, through high-frequency sampling (every 2-3 h ...
